WK&T selects Calix for wireline BIP broadband stimulus project
Broadband stimulus award winner West Kentucky and Tennessee Telecommunications Cooperative (WK&T) has selected the Calix B6 Ethernet Service Access Nodes (ESANs) and the 700GE family of optical network terminals (ONTs) from Calix Inc. (NYSE:CALX) to provide western Kentucky and Tennessee with an advanced broadband infrastructure capable of delivering speeds of up to 1 Gbps (gigabit per second).Upon completion, this deployment will be one of the nation's largest Active Ethernet deployments, bringing advanced IPTV services, fast data services, and high-quality voice services to 21,000 homes and 99 community institutions, including schools, libraries, and public buildings across a nine-county service area. With an aggregate value of $124 million, the award is one of the largest "last-mile" broadband stimulus awards and the largest single award focused on wireline services. WK&T's award consists of a $62 million grant and a $62 million loan to be used for plant engineering, materials, labor, and other costs, including access equipment."Our rural region and its subscribers will now enjoy the benefits of a world-class fiber network infrastructure," says WK&T CEO Trevor Bonnstetter. "We are looking at this project as a strategic investment in the future of our communities, stimulating economic development, and providing the residents and businesses in our service area the foundation for long-term economic growth. The combination of Calix's broad residential and business ONT portfolio, our existing investment in the B6 ESANs, and comprehensive network management via the Calix Management System (CMS) gives us confidence that we will be delivering new opportunity to the deserving subscribers of our region."WK&T will deploy the B6 ESANs with Calix's ONT portfolio, including the Calix 716GE and 760GX families of ONTs, to deliver broadband access across its targeted service area. The project is estimated to create 160 new jobs in the region over the next three years."Projects like WK&T's are proving to be transformative to the regions that they serve," explains Carl Russo, president and CEO of Calix. "The Broadband Stimulus program is not only providing new economic opportunities and improving the quality of life in the 'unserved' and 'underserved' communities it targets, but it is playing a major role in the strategic imperative of improving our country's global competitiveness. Calix is honored to be a key enabler of this program, having to date been chosen as the access solutions partner to in aggregate over $1 billion in broadband stimulus project awards which will bring advanced broadband infrastructure to nearly 2.3 million homes, businesses, and community institutions."

ZTE to power BelTelecom GPON FTTH national broadband network
ZTE Corp. says it will supply GPON fiber to the home (FTTH) equipment for BelTelecom’s national broadband network project in Belarus. The multi-phase project will cover all the seven regions of the country, including the capital of Minsk. BelTelecom expects to use the FTTH network to provide data and HDTV video services, as well as remote education and telemedicine services. ZTE will supply its ZXA10 C300 integrated access platform for the FTTH project, as well as a variety of optical network terminals (ONTs). The company’s EasyService O&M platform will provide terminal management, service deployment, and fault diagnosis across the network. This is not the first time that ZTE has supplied equipment for BelTelecom’s network. For example, ZTE has shipped IPTV products to BelTelecom since 2007, and has since supplied the operator with more than 1.5 million ADSL terminals. ZTE said its relationship with Belarus’s main telecom provider enabled it to participate in the testing and bidding for BelTelecom’s national broadband network project. ZTE Vice President Xu Ming said: “We have paid close attention to BelTelecom’s broadband construction all along. Ever since ZTE started to supply fixed-line terminals, we have been offering them customized products and services. Now we have every confidence to help the customer build a premium network.”

EPB, Alcatel-Lucent Bell Labs partner for smart grid via FTTH
EPB, the electric power distributor in Chattanooga, TN, that made waves last year by offering 1-Gbps services over its new GPON FTTH network, has strengthened its ties with its GPON equipment supplier, Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU). The two companies have partnered to develop smart grid energy management services using the GPON FTTH network, with the analysis of energy usage as an initial step.A growing number of utilities see FTTH networks as a means to support their smart grid efforts (see "Fiber-enabled smart grid initiative launched on Prince Edward Island" and "Central Indiana Power deploys FTTH-based smart grid" for examples). Speaking with Lightwave at last year’s FTTH Conference in September, EPB Executive Vice President and COO David Wade and EPB Fiber Optics Vice President Katie Espeseth made no secret of their desire to leverage the GPON infrastructure for smart grid applications as well as communications services (see “Who needs 1-Gbps FTTH” from the November/December 2011 issue of Lightwave). Thus, in addition to connecting homes, EPB also is using the GPON network as a backbone to connect sensors and control devices at locations throughout its electrical grid. This will provide EPB with a high-bandwidth platform through which it can measure, monitor, and control its electricity distribution network in real time."With today's power grid infrastructure model, most electric power customers pay one rate per kilowatt hour -- regardless of when the power was generated. But the cost to generate power can vary from time of day, time of week, and time of year. Plus, today's electric meters can give us only limited after-the-fact information," said Harold DePriest, president and CEO of EPB. "Our smart grid is intended to not only provide customers the ability to better manage their energy use, but also alert us, and the user, in real time to any spikes in usage, so that immediate action can be taken if there is a problem within a home or business. To do that, we need to be able to analyze the network at far greater levels of detail than has been possible before."Alcatel-Lucent's Bell Labs aims to help EPB with such analysis through the development of analytical techniques and tools to better sift through the data it now can access from smart meters, Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems, and other sources. The hope is that EPB can leverage its GPON network to better detect and fix distribution grid anomalies before they degrade services, more efficiently manage power purchases from outside electricity suppliers such as the Tennessee Valley Authority, and offer customers energy management services of their own.
