PON, VDSL, cable equipment sales continue growth in 3Q12, says Dell'Oro
Sales of systems for access networks – which includes PON, DSL, and cable hybrid fiber/coax (HFC) equipment – grew by a “moderate” 6% year-on-year in the third quarter of 2012, according to a new report by Dell’Oro Group. PON systems were the stars, advancing 21% over the same quarter of 2011.Systems for cable MSO networks grew 5% annually. However, DSL equipment declined versus the year-ago quarter, as a decrease in ADSL revenues offset 30% growth in VDSL revenues.“We saw strong growth from three segments in the third quarter. PON revenue surged to a record level, largely driven by strong GPON shipments to China, continuing the trend of the last several years,” said Steve Nozik, principal analyst of access research at Dell’Oro Group. “Cable revenue growth was driven by strong DOCSIS 3.0 CPE sales that more than offset sharply lower CMTS sales.“For DSL, high-speed VDSL port shipments grew more than 50% over the year ago period driven by Western Europe, where a number of operators have chosen a fiber-to-the-node (FTTN) upgrade strategy utilizing VDSL,” Nozik said.Alcatel-Lucent, Huawei, and ZTE won the quarter in the GPON space; excluding sales in China, however, Calix would jump into the third position, the report states. In the growing VDSL segment Alcatel-Lucent and Huawei again held the top two slots, with ADTRAN at number three. For cable equipment sales, Cisco retained its top position in CMTS sales in 3Q12, while Arris led the cable CPE segment.The Dell’Oro Group Quarterly Access Report provides tables that cover manufacturers’ revenue, average selling prices, and port/unit shipments for cable, DSL, and PON equipment.

Panduit, Avago guarantee 550-m multimode fiber reach at 40 Gbps
Panduit Corp. and Avago Technologies Inc. say they have formed an alliance to help organizations save capital expenses in their data center and make it easier to implement advanced network architectures. Specifically, using Panduit’s Signature Core Fiber Optic Cabling System with Avago’s QSFP+ eSR4 pluggable, parallel fiber-optics modules, the companies say they can guarantee a reach of 550 m for 40 Gigabit Ethernet (40GbE) multimode fiber links. The reach exceeds that specified in IEEE 802.3ba for such applications.“Avago introduced the 40 Gigabit Ethernet eSR4 modules to provide a migration path for data centers to upgrade from 10G to 40G Ethernet and span longer reaches,” said Philip Gadd, vice president and general manager of fiber optics, Avago. “We are happy to be working with Panduit to provide our customers with the longest reach 40 Gigabit Ethernet links possible.”The Avago Technologies QSFP+ eSR4 is a pluggable, parallel, QSFP+ optical transceiver. It integrates four data lanes in each direction with each lane operating at 10.3125 Gbps, giving an aggregated bandwidth of 40 Gbps, and also can be used for high-density 10 Gigabit Ethernet applications. The QSFP+ eSR4 modules are warranteed by Avago to 400-m multimode fiber link distances based upon generic industry fiber standards. With the Panduit Signature Core Fiber Optic Cabling System, the reach of certain links has been measured to extend beyond 550 m.Panduit says its Signature Core Fiber Optic Cabling System maintains signal integrity better than all other types of multimode fiber. This enables network architects to deploy less expensive multimode fiber links versus more expensive singlemode links – a savings of thousands of dollars per link, the company says. A reach of 550 m extends the reach of the cabling system to cover virtually all of the fiber optic links within a datacenter. In addition, network architects can now extend the radius of fabric-based architectures that use 40-Gbps uplinks to connect the aggregation and core switching layers out to 550 m, increasing distance and flexibility.

Metro Communications opts for Cyan Blue Planet SDN and packet-optical transport
Cyan, Inc. says Illinois-based Metro Communications Company, Inc. has chosen Cyan’s Blue Planet software-defined network (SDN) system and Z-Series packet-optical transport platforms to expand its core network infrastructure.In its entirety, the new network will cover over 700 fiber route miles in central Illinois and deliver wavelength and Ethernet services to mobile operators as well as businesses and government offices throughout its operating area. The flexibility in the Z-Series is ideal for central Illinois where we serve both metropolitan and rural markets across our 25,000 square mile footprint."The Cyan Z-Series packet-optical transport platforms (P-OTPs) will be deployed to deliver DWDM, Ethernet, and legacy SONET services. The Z-Series offers up to 2.8 Tbps of switching capacity and offers environmentally hardened units compact enough for deployment at tower locations (see “Cyan adds multi-layer switch fabric for router bypass to Z-Series”). Meanwhile, Blue Planet includes a range of Cyan and third-party applications handling everything from planning, configuration, and management, through performance verification and billing.Jeff Parow, Cyan vice president of sales for the Eastern US, added, "Metro Communications' deployment of Cyan exemplifies the importance of combining software, hardware, and services in an integrated package.
