Geo completes fiber ring connecting UK and Ireland
Dark fiber provider Geo Networks Ltd. says it has completed the newest optical fiber ring between the UK and Ireland, providing an advanced, secure, and reliable network between the two countries.Built in collaboration with partners including ESB Telecoms, an Irish infrastructure and bandwidth provider, Geo’s new east-west ring will bring the Geo dedicated fiber model to Dublin and the rest of Ireland. Using Geo’s UK fiber-optic network and the FibreSpeed network in North Wales, Dublin and London are now connected for the first time in the same way as many other European cities, with a high fiber count, diversely routed fiber-optic cable system, Geo asserts.Demand for high capacity, scalable bandwidth between the UK and Ireland is growing fast, says Geo, and the new diverse route design has been specifically optimized for heavy data users such as data centers, mobile and fixed line carriers, cloud providers, and the digital, financial, and high-tech sectors. With a high fiber count and the shortest routes, customers will benefit from virtually limitless capacity, best-in-class low-latency bandwidth, and future-proof and 100-Gbps capable technology that can meet even the most demanding of requirements, Geo adds.Geo says multinational customers such as Cogent are already signed up to use this new network. In addition, organizations across Ireland can now connect to anywhere in the UK including direct connectivity into over 100 data centers and key internet exchanges in London and elsewhere.“We are delighted to have completed the first fully diverse, Anglo-Irish cable system offering dedicated fiber solutions,” said Chris Smedley, chief executive, Geo. “With business demand for high-capacity data networks growing all the time, it is vital that they have the infrastructure to support their needs. Customers on both sides of the Irish Sea will benefit from a single service provider offering a combination of two routes between the UK and Ireland, and the diversity will provide unequalled resilience, unmatched in service availability.”John McSweeney, head of innovation at ESB said, “The new fiber connection to the UK is a natural extension of ESB Telecom’s existing fiber network. Companies based here can now directly connect to over 100 data centers and key Internet exchanges in London and elsewhere in the UK through a single supplier. This is a huge boost to Ireland’s communications infrastructure, which will help to attract high-growth, data-intensive companies to locate here.”A pioneer of dedicated fiber networks in the UK, Geo claims it is the only provider to offer private optical connectivity on two completely diverse routes between the UK and Ireland.

ADTRAN delivers GPON FTTH pilot network in Athens
ADTRAN, Inc. (NASDAQ:ADTN) says its GPON platform is being used by Greek broadband provider Forthnet in what it claims is the first fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) pilot network in the metropolitan area of Athens. The platform will enable delivery of high-bandwidth triple-play services to residential and business subscribers. With over 2,000 homes initially served in the municipality of Nea, Forthnet will be able to deliver FTTH based services that place Athens alongside other high service density European FTTH deployments.Forthnet is an experienced broadband provider that offers a bundle of sports, movies, and entertainment, plus telephony, over its existing DSL network. ADTRAN says its equipment allows Forthnet to easily migrate customers to the new FTTH services, while enabling capacity and bandwidth scale for future demands of new media-rich services.“We believe our future strategy for the transition to next-generation networks should be based on FTTH architecture,” explained Giannis Kavaklis, chief commercial director at Forthnet. “By taking this approach, we are not only enabling the metropolitan area of Athens to make the necessary technology leap, but are also giving local residents and businesses the opportunity to use new bandwidth-hungry applications without fear of reduced performance or latency. ADTRAN’s FTTH solution not only gives us the bandwidth required today, but also provides a simple migration path forward that helps us to stay competitive in our market in the long term.”

Zayo adds 100-Gbps optical transmission capability
Zayo Group says that it has begun deployment of 100-Gbps coherent transmission technology in multiple markets, with an eye toward a nationwide deployment. The 100G capabilities are already available in some markets, with deployments expected to continue into the first half of 2013.The fiber-optic network services provider expects the new capabilities, targeted at “key traffic aggregation points and IP nodes throughout the U.S.,” will enable the delivery of cost-efficient, high-bandwidth services between major U.S. markets."Zayo is a focused bandwidth infrastructure provider and upgrading along key routes to 100G technology is the next step in providing customers with the latest high bandwidth technology," says Zach Nebergall of Zayo's wavelength product group. "Additionally, the Zayo national network provides unique route options which enable our customers to take advantage of fiber path diversity between these core traffic aggregation locations."Zayo says the deployments take advantage of “the latest coherent optical technology.” Queries regarding the technology’s suppliers have not yet been answered. The platform enable Zayo to scale network capacity to 8 Tbps.
