North American FTTH market worth $4.7B by 2017, says RVA
Market research firm RVA LLC predicts in a report released today that direct investment in North American fiber to the home (FTTH) deployment will reach $4.7 billion annually by 2017. Altogether, the market will be worth $18 billion across the next five years, RVA asserts. Meanwhile, operators will see FTTH services revenues grow to $4 billion by 2017, almost half of the cumulative $9 billion North American service providers will see over the same fiber-year period.The report, North American Fiber to the Home and Advanced Broadband Review and Forecast to 2017, tracks both FTTH deployments and consumer demand for high-bandwidth services. The report states that deployment growth will continue over the next five years despite the wrap-up of the ARRA broadband stimulus program, the evolution of the FCC’s Universal Service program to the Connect America Fund, and potential continuation of past economic uncertainties. Market expansion will come via what an RVA press release described as “a diverse group of small to large providers” who will supplant Verizon as the primary market catalysts. Meanwhile, the deployment focus will shift from overbuilds to greenfield applications over the five-year forecast period, RVA says.On the user end of the equation, RVA also expects the number of subscribers for high-bandwidth services ranging to the 1-Gbps will increase rapidly. These high-bandwidth users will create an important market for for application, software, and programming developers.

Smart grids in China a big opportunity for PON technology, says Ovum
Global analyst firm Ovum says in a new report that demand for PON systems to enable smart grids in China could be worth $1.5 billion to $2 billion to FTTx PON optical component and equipment vendors. That’s because the State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC) could decide to provide communications services with the same infrastructure, according to The Merger of China’s Smart Grid and PON – A Potential Perfect Storm.The SGCC has yet to formally announce such plans. Nevertheless, technology vendors should pay close attention, Ovum asserts. “We believe that the ultimate goal of a fiber-based smart grid is to support advanced communications services,” explains Julie Kunstler, principal analyst of components at Ovum. “Building a fiber-based smart grid communications network creates a very large market opportunity for PON vendors.“This potential market is important, as Ovum forecasts declining PON OLT port shipments beginning in 2013, following major FTTx network buildouts in China,” she adds.Ovum notes that several PON communications equipment vendors already have developed products that meet smart grid requirements as well as support triple-play communications services provision. The deployment in China of a PON-based smart grid would benefit such OLT equipment vendors as Huawei, ZTE, Alcatel-Lucent, and FiberHome. Vendors of ONTs and such components as fiber splitters, optical transceivers, BOSAs, PON MAC chips, and optical interface chips also would benefit. “A PON-based smart grid deployment would also benefit the fiber cabling manufacturers, such as Yangtze Optical Fibre and Cable (YOFC), Corning, and Prysmian,” Kunstler adds.Kunstler cautions that even if SGCC moves as expected, winning business will not be child’s play. Price pressures will likely be “brutal,” as an Ovum press release put it, and therefore vendors will have to squeeze every penny out of their bills material. Meanwhile, good relationships with in-country smart meter companies, PON equipment vendors, and the relevant governmental agencies, also will be important in winning business.

Paul Bonenfant Scholarship fundraising exceeds goal
The OSA Foundation (OSAF) reports that fundraising for the Paul A. Bonenfant Memorial Scholarship has exceeded its goal of $190,000.The need-based scholarship program enables undergraduates enrolled in engineering or physical science programs to attend semester-abroad programs offered via their schools. The OSAF established the scholarship program in 2011 in honor of Bonenfant, who passed away in 2011 (see “OSA scholarship honors Paul Bonenfant”). Bonenfant had a successful and varied career in optical communications, which included positions at optical communications companies as well as in finance; he was an analyst at Morgan Keegan at the time of his death. He also was a member of the technical program committee for the Optical Fiber Communication Conference and Exposition/National Fiber Optic Engineers Conference (OFC/NFOEC), co-sponsored by the OSA.While contributions to the scholarship fund came from a variety of sources, key contributions came from an anonymous donor who matched donations up to $62,000 and a series of 5K runs organized by Kelly Skelton (son of Lightwave media consultant Kathleen Skelton), telecom marketing agency Pacific Bridge Marketing, and OSAF staff (see "Lightwave helps OSA Foundation scholarship cross finish line with 5K run").“We’re incredibly grateful to our industry peers, corporate donors, and individual supporters that have contributed to the success of this campaign,” said Michael Morris, OSA Foundation Board chair. “The Bonenfant Scholarship will allow the next generation of researchers, engineers, and physicists to gain important international experience and connect with industry leaders in the global optics community as they prepare for their professional careers.”The first scholarship will be awarded in March at OFC/NFOEC 2013 in Anaheim, CA.
