Hibernia Atlantic changes name, refinances debt
Global fiber-optic network services provider Hibernia Atlantic has changed its name to  Hibernia Networks. The company also announced that it has completed a $52.5 million debt refinancing.“Hibernia Atlantic” no longer fits the company’s business scope, given that it has expanded from providing services over its transatlantic fiber-optic cable system (see, for example “Hibernia Atlantic undersea network to connect Iceland with North America and Europe”) to a more global player. “Hibernia has evolved well beyond its original transatlantic serving area,” stated Bjarni Thorvardarson, the company’s CEO. “Today, as Hibernia Networks, our company reflects a unified team offering worldwide network services to a focused, but expanding, customer base.”Hibernia Networks comprises three strategic platforms -- wholesale, financial, and media. As part of the name change, Hibernia Media will now be fully integrated under the Hibernia Networks platform. The company’s global network, with more than 24,000 km of fiber, currently reaches more than 120 points of presence (PoPs) in North America, Ireland, United Kingdom, Europe, and the Pacific Rim. It also operates five company-owned cable landing stations.Meanwhile, the debt refinancing has enabled Hibernia Networks to pay off existing debt as well as provide funds for growth and working capital. The new lender group includes funds managed by affiliates of Fortress Investment Group LLC and Bridge Bank.“With this transaction, Hibernia has reduced its cost of capital considerably – a reflection of the successful execution of our business plan,” stated Lloyd Jarkow, CFO of Hibernia.  “Hibernia is focused on continued growth and we are excited about the strategic value of our new lender relationships.”

TE Subcom demos coherent 100G on transatlantic submarine cable system
Undersea fiber-optic cable systems equipment developer TE SubCom, a TE Connectivity Ltd. Company, says it has successfully demonstrated the capabilities of its 100-Gbps C100 transmitter. The demonstration saw the successful transmission of 100G coherent transmission on a transatlantic undersea fiber-optic network constructed in 2001.The C100 leverages dual-polarization quadrature phase-shift keying (DP-QPSK) with coherent detection. During the demonstration, use of the transmitter technology was shown to support 4.4 Tbps on a single fiber. The C100 can be effective on both new systems based on +D fibers as well as system upgrades on networks with dispersion managed fiber, TE Subcom says.“Emerging high-bandwidth applications such as video and cloud computing continue to increase the demand on today’s networks,” said Seymour Shapiro, CTO, TE SubCom. “Carriers must take advantage of technology enhancements to deliver the most cost-effective solutions to this tremendous challenge. SubCom’s latest C100 coherent solutions increase network capacity on both today’s existing undersea cables and tomorrow’s new cables, with reaches up to 11,000 km, and utilizing the latest +D fibers.”TE SubCom asserts it has demonstrated the ability to support reaches up to 11,000 km with capabilities of up to 15 Tbps on beta hardware prototypes. It adds that a number of its customers have already begun to leverage the 100G technology in their networks.

Comcast moves to 100 Gbps with Ciena
Cable MSO Comcast Cable is upgrading its core network to 100-Gbps coherent transmission via the 6500 Packet-Optical Platform from Ciena Corp. (NASDAQ: CIEN).Comcast already had 6500 optical transport systems in its network; it bought the systems from Nortel before Ciena purchased Nortel’s MEN assets (see “Comcast launches nationwide long-haul IP/optical network”). The company conducted 100-Gbps trials with Nortel as early as 2008 (see “Comcast tries 100G”). With an increasing demand for more capacity to support such services as HD video, mobile data, and cloud computing, the time apparently had arrived to step up from 40 Gbps.“Adding Ciena’s WaveLogic 3 to our already installed 6500 Packet-Optical Platforms lets us leverage that investment to deliver more content, faster Internet speeds, and enable new cloud-based applications for our customers, while also providing future core 400G scalability,” said Kevin McElearney, senior vice president, network engineering, at Comcast Cable. “As we scale beyond our 100G network, Ciena’s coherent optical technology will help us to deliver on our ongoing commitment to maintain and operate a high-performance, feature-rich advanced network.”In addition to higher capacity, the upgrade will simplify Comcast’s network by reducing the number of network components, including optical regenerators, Ciena says. It also will increase service provisioning flexibility. In addition to the 100G technology, Ciena says it also will supply network management system capabilities and professional services via its Ciena Specialist Services portfolio, including furnishing and installation.“Service providers are continuously looking for new ways to meet the needs of their customers while extracting the most value out of their vast network infrastructures,” said Francois Locoh-Donou, senior vice president, Global Products Group at Ciena. “Through a combination of consultative customer engagements based on network analytics and transformational planning, along with state-of-the-art 100G technology, we are able to help customers like Comcast transform network infrastructure so that they can meet escalating bandwidth and service demands.”
