NEC, Corning claim petabit transmission over a single optical fiber
NEC Corporation of America and optical fiber provider Corning Inc. (NYSE:GLW) claim to have achieved a new record for the transmission capacity over optical fibers. Researchers from NEC Labs in Princeton, NJ, and from Corning’s Sullivan Park Research Center in Corning, NY, have successfully demonstrated ultra-high speed transmission with a capacity of 1.05 Pbps (1015 bits per second) over novel multi-core fiber (MCF) that contains 12 single-mode and two few-mode cores. The transmission employed a space-division multiplexing (SDM) scheme and optical multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) signal processing technique.Designed by Corning researchers, the fiber has cores arranged in a triangular lattice, which enables transmission over a large number of spatial modes. By combining spectral multiplexing with polarization and spatial mode multiplexing and employing multilevel modulation formats, NEC researchers achieved a total spectral efficiency of 109 bits/sec/Hz. The aggregate transmission capacity of 1.050 Pbps is the highest capacity over a single optical fiber reported so far, the researchers claim.“This achievement is a continuation of NEC’s leadership in ultra-high optical transmission systems. We recently demonstrated the highest capacity over singlemode optical fibers, and now we have opened new frontiers with the highest transmission capacity over any type of optical fibers,” said Dr. Ting Wang, head of optical networking research at NEC Laboratories America. “We are proud to lead industry efforts with Corning and to provide solutions that will be the foundation of the next generation of networking.”"As the foundation of telecommunications networks, optical fiber innovation enables carriers to cost-effectively keep up with ever-growing traffic demands," said Cynthia B. Huawei Marine Networks Co. Ltd. has announced the commercial availability of its second-generation repeater and branching unit for subsea telecommunication networks. The optical repeater is targeted at regional and long-haul systems that need high performance and reliability with two, four, and six fiber-pair cables coupled with what Huawei Marine asserts is a unique pump redundancy architecture design.The second-generation repeater (RPT 1660) leverages the technology behind Huawei Marine’s first-generation subsea products, which are operating in several live commercial systems, says the company. The technology uses a slim-line, compact repeater housing that reduces the operational cost associated with repeater integration and loading, and offers improved plough burial performance, according to the company.The branching unit (BU 1650), specially optimized for applications with submarine fiber-optic cable systems, provides users with the flexibility to service multiple landing points, or future-proof designs when landing points are yet to be defined. These robust units offer power switching and optical switching capability (up to eight fiber pairs), managed through a single network management system that offers customers a single touch point to control and monitor subsea and terrestrial fiber-optic networks.Engineered with proven universal joint technology, the combination of the optical repeater and branching unit provides a cost-effective implementation in subsea communication systems, Huawei Marine says. With titanium housings, the optical repeater and branching unit have a mechanically robust design that offers light weight and improved strength. Customers can leverage the whole lifecycle cost savings associated with turnkey offerings via this product set, the company adds.Huawei Marine is a joint venture between Huawei and Global Marine Systems. The RPT1660 and BU 1650 were jointly designed by the two companies. "Combining Huawei's technological core skills in optical transmission with Global Marine's experience in marine installation and maintenance has been a truly remarkable combination of skills that has helped realize this milestone," explained Nigel Bayliff, CEO of Huawei Marine.

Xtera extends 100-Gbps technology to long-haul submarine cable networks
Xtera Communications, Inc. says it has enhanced its Raman-based 100-Gbps coherent-transmission technology to cover the needs of long-haul submarine fiber-optic cable networks. The upgraded technology is based on that used in the 100-Gbps submarine line terminal equipment (SLTE) supplied to Gulf Bridge International (GBI) for a repeatered submarine cable system that links Egypt to Italy. That system, put into service in the first quarter of last year, is the first and only 100G repeatered subsea system in commercial operation today, Xtera asserts.Xtera says it has performed “numerous” 100G field trials across the globe as well as what it calls “Optical Transmission Surveys" (OTS’s). The field trials comprised links with multiple fiber types of different links. The OTS’s, meanwhile, helped Xtera determine the maximum system capacity that current subsea fiber-optic networks could support using Xtera’s technology as well as improve its simulation tools.The trials and OTS activity underscored the need to enhance the company’s 100-Gbps technology for long-haul, repeatered applications, a company source told Lightwave via email. The new technology, which is currently available, takes advantage of a change in the optical pulse shape as well as improvements in the dispersion compensation performance of the digital coherent receiver.
