FTTH Council launches online community toolkit
The Fiber to the Home (FTTH) Council Americas has launched its Online Community Toolkit, which is aimed at community and business leaders looking to secure their economic future through ultra high-speed Internet connectivity by upgrading local networks to all-fiber.The toolkit offers an array of templates, white papers, case studies, and other features that are designed to assist civic leaders, local telecommunications providers, and other groups to finance, plan and build all-fiber-optic networks that are capable of delivering gigabit speeds and beyond.The Council's Web-based platform becomes available just days after the chairman of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), Julius Genachowski, issued a "Gigabit City Challenge" calling for every state to have at least one community where gigabit-speed broadband service is available by 2015."The recent experience that Google had in deciding where to build its gigabit fiber network, and particularly the overwhelming expression of interest from across the U.S., was a clear indication that civic leaders know their communities need to have all-fiber networks in order to grow, to attract businesses, and to create jobs. Chairman Genachowski's recent challenge has underscored that America's future competitiveness is riding on how quickly we can move to all-fiber connectivity," said Heather Burnett Gold, president of the FTTH Council.To create the Online Community Toolkit, Council members contributed their own knowledge and experiences with regard to deploying all-fiber networks and providing high-bandwidth services.Additionally, the FTTH Council partnered with Gig.U, an organization that is working to help university communities bring in ultra-high-speed networks, in creating key elements of the Toolkit, most notably a series of six detailed RFP templates aimed at helping any kind of project – public sector, private sector, and public-private partnership – understand and initiate critical steps of the design and construction process.Gold said the Council is also preparing a major event in Kansas City at mid-year at which a broad range of local civic and business leaders will have the opportunity to learn from communities that have already deployed all-fiber networks, as well as other experts who will offer guidance on getting their FTTH projects underway. Details on the event will be announced soon, she said."Clearly, the world is going gigabit, and it won't be long before this level of connectivity – which only all-fiber networks can provide – will be a requirement for our communities to stay competitive," said Gold. "We know that almost any community of any size can have ultra high-speed bandwidth, because many of our members are deploying next-generation, all-fiber networks in their service areas. Our goal for this new FTTH Toolkit is to impart their experienced-based knowledge so that any community can get on board and be a part of the gigabit revolution."

Agilent shows off 32G BERT at DesignCon
Agilent Technologies Inc. (NYSE: A) is demonstrating a 32-Gbps bit error-ratio tester (BERT) with fast rise time and higher output amplitude at DesignCon, booth 201, in Santa Clara Convention Center, on January 29—30.A new era of cloud computing, big data and analytics is driving the development of new high-speed standards for the data center such as 100-Gigabit Ethernet (100GbE) and 32-Gbps Fibre Channel. The higher speeds create new testing challenges for optical and electrical component designers. More stringent requirements for component characterization necessitate faster rise/fall times. Optical transceivers and transmitter optical subassemblies (TOSAs) require high drive voltages that standard pattern-generator outputs cannot supply.To address these issues, Agilent has created remotely mountable pattern-generator heads for use with its N4960A family of bit error-ratio testers. The new pattern-generator heads, N4951B Option H32 and Option H17, feature rise and fall times of 12 ps to improve signal fidelity at the test pin. In addition, these new options integrate higher voltage output drivers into the pattern generator. This feature enables designers of optical transceivers to directly drive VCSELs, TOSAs, and laser modulators for higher-data-rate applications such as 100GbE and OIF-CEI-28G, without the need for external driver amplifiers, associated interconnecting cables, and power supplies.“Across our broad range of BERT solutions, Agilent offers choices for applications in R&D, validation and manufacturing,” said Jürgen Beck, vice president and general manager of Agilent’s Digital Photonics Test Division. “Each of our BERTs delivers accurate, repeatable results that help engineers precisely characterize performance and ensure compliance with industry standards. We have improved the rise/fall times of our 32-Gbps N4960A serial BERT family so high-speed component designers now have the signal fidelity and headroom they need to test their next-generation devices.”As part of the N4960A BERT family, the new pattern generators are configured as remote heads connected to the BERT controller with a cable. This configuration allows the pattern generator to be located close to the device under test, minimizing the length of the signal cable, which helps minimize signal degradation.The new pattern generators are available now. Agilent’s N4960A Serial BERT starts at $177,428 for the 32-Gbps configuration with the higher voltage output option. For existing N4960A serial BERT system owners, the 17-Gbps and 32-Gbps pattern generators with integrated higher voltage outputs are available starting at $42,800.
