Calix E7-2 powers Cotswolds community fiber access project
Calix, Inc. (NYSE:CALX) says that its E7-2 Ethernet Service Access Platform (ESAP) is being used to support a community fiber access project in the residential and farming villages of Overbury and Conderton in the UK. The villages are part of the Overbury Estate in the Cotswolds region. The project will create a fiber to the premises (FTTP) broadband network capable of support speeds up to 1 Gbps. While the Estate has had access to some form of broadband for more than 10 years, modern requirements led the community to improve its infrastructure via FTTP. The fiber-optic broadband network will support the needs of a wide variety of residences and businesses, including farming and professional businesses and a range of local trades, crafts, and services establishments. The FTTP network also will meet the needs of such community anchor institutions as the village hall, church, and school.“The Overbury Estate may be a small community, but we have a big vision. We aim to create a rural quality of life that is as well-resourced as urban living, but with all the advantages of landscape and environment, relaxed lifestyle, and close community ties,” says Penelope Bossom, whose family has owned and managed Overbury Estate for nearly 300 years. “That includes high-quality broadband services that allow residents to live, work, and play as they want. The pilot has been very successful and we are now rolling out to all the houses on the Estate, plus a drop-in hub for villagers, local craftspeople, and organizations to use for their business purposes. Eventually we will be able to extend the services to the other community facilities too.”“Overbury is a great example of the difference that high-speed broadband services can make in a rural community in a relatively short space of time,” said Andy Lockhart, senior vice president of international sales and marketing at Calix. “Calix has already delivered a number of innovative community projects in the UK and globally. Along with Derwenthorpe in York and Alston Moor in the Pennines, Overbury is a further example of how we are bringing our experience in North America’s rural broadband market to the UK, and in doing so setting a new standard for advanced broadband services in the country.”Calix Channel Partner Fibre Options designed and implemented the network.

Telefonica demos 10-Tbps superchannel transmission with Infinera
Telefónica (NYSE:TEF) and Infinera (NASDAQ: INFN) say they have successfully demonstrated the use of superchannels to transmit 10 Tbps on a single fiber. The “Terabit Technology Showcase” leveraged technology from both parties.Specifically, the showcase combined Infinera’s FlexCoherent technology to create quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) and 16-QAM superchannels with Telefónica I+D’s Flexi-Grid standards-based GMPLS control plane. The 10 Tbps of capacity came in the form of ten 1-Tbps superchannels developed through Infinera’s technology. Meanwhile, Telefónica’s prototype Flexi-Grid GMPLS control plane was used to demonstrate rapid service deployment, robust protection, and ease-of-use. The two parties point out that GMPLS-based control plane are currently a focus of standardization within the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) standards committees."Infinera’s 10-terabit superchannel transmission and flexible grid transmission have been successfully tested in Telefónica I+D labs,” said Juan Fernandez-Palacios, head of Core Network Evolution at Telefónica I+D-GCTO Unit. "This demonstration shows a promising path to higher capacity and cost-effective optical transmission beyond 100 Gbps.""We are extremely pleased with the results of our Terabit Technology Showcase with Telefónica," said Dave Welch, co-founder, executive vice president, and chief strategy officer at Infinera. "This demonstration is another proof point that Infinera’s Digital Optical Network solution with photonic integrated circuits is the foundation of next-generation optical networks growing beyond 100G.”

Huawei helps TIM Brazil build G.653-based 100G WDM Network
Huawei Technologies Co Ltd. says it had successfully assisted TIM Brazil, a subsidiary of Telecom Italia Group, in constructing what it claims is the world's first coherent 100G WDM network based on dispersion-shifted G.653 singlemode fiber. It is also one of the first 100G DWDM networks in Latin America.TIM's core optical transport networks are currently 10G and 40G WDM. As new services appear and grow rapidly, such as FTTx, UMTS, and LTE, the core network will become increasingly strained. The limitations of a 10G WDM networks make the upgrade to 100G networks particularly urgent. The G.653 optical fiber used on TIM's current networks has different optical properties from the standard G.652 optical fiber used in most other regions of the world. Featuring strong non-linear effects such as four-wave mixing (FWM) and polarization mode dispersion (PMD), G.653 optical fiber is not usually compatible with long-haul DWDM transmission.Huawei says it has developed advanced technologies to overcome these constraints, including modulation format technologies, non-linearity suppression algorithms, and PMD compensation algorithms. These technologies effectively address the constraints of the G.653 optical fiber and enable long-haul transmission of 100G signals over distances in excess of 1000 km.Last year Infinera Corp. (NASDAQ: INFN) and its Japanese partner, Nissho Electronics, used the DTN-X platform to deliver 8 Tbps via superchannels across 800 km of ITU-T G.653 fiber (see “Infinera, Nissho show 8-Tbps transmission over dispersion-shifted fiber”).Huawei says the experience that TIM and Huawei have obtained in deploying this 100G WDM network will go a long way to inspire confidence for constructing 100G WDM networks across Latin America.
