Sky agrees to buy broadband and fixed-line telephony business from Telefonica UK
British Sky Broadcasting Group plc says it has agreed to buy the O2 and BE consumer broadband and fixed-line telephony business from Telefónica UK. The price tag will be £180 million, with as much as an additional £20 million going to Telefónica UK once that company’s more than 500,000 subscribers transition to Sky.Sky will use existing cash reserves for the purchase, which is expected to be accretive to earnings in the second full year of ownership. The deal is expected to close this April.The service provider says that successful completion of the deal will make it the second-largest broadband provider in the UK. The carrier currently operates a nationwide backbone fiber-optic network that puts it within reach of 84% of UK households.“Sky has been the UK’s fastest-growing broadband and telephony provider since we entered the market six years ago,” asserted Jeremy Darroch, Sky’s chief executive. “From a standing start in 2006, we have added more than 4.2 million broadband customers. Yenista Optics offers 1240- to 1700-nm tunable lasers
Fiber-optic test and measurement equipment specialist Yenista Optics will unveil new additions to its TUNICS T100S-HP high-power tunable laser family this month at OFC/NFOEC in Anaheim, CA.The new members bring the T100S-HP portfolio to six tunable lasers. For easy identification, the lasers have been named after the wavelength tuning bands they cover: /O+ for 1240 – 1380 nm /O for 1260 – 1360 nm /ES for 1340 – 1520 nm` /SCL for 1440 – 1640 nm /CL for 1500 – 1630 nm /CLU for 1500 – 1700 nm.The /O and /CL lasers feature 10-dBm minimum output power and are dedicated to the main telecom applications. The /O+, /ES, /SCL, and /CLU lasers have 8-dBm minimum output power and support the largest wavelength ranges available on the market, making it possible to cover the full telecom wavelength band from 1240 to 1700 nm at 8 dBm with just the /O+, /ES and /CLU lasers.“We managed to implement important innovations that enabled us to extend the wavelength range and to increase the output power without any compromise on other specifications of the T100S,” said Michiel van der Keur, Yenista’s CEO. “With the TUNICS T100S-HP portfolio, we offer the most advanced and cost-effective solution for all R&D and manufacturing environments.”The /O and /CL models are available now; the /O+, /ES, /SCL and /CLU lasers start shipping in May.

OmniTel Communications uses ADTRAN for broadband stimulus FTTH
ADTRAN, Inc. (NASDAQ:ADTN) reveals that it has supplied its Total Access broadband platform OmniTel Communications for the service provider’s fiber to the home (FTTH) network roll out. OmniTel is deploying the broadband access network as part of an Iowa Broadband Deployment Governance board project that is using a broadband stimulus grant from the Rural Utilities Service to provide broadband services to more than 7000 subscribers in rural areas of the state.OmniTel is deploying ADTRAN’s Total Access 5000 platform in its Active Ethernet configuration.“We had heard from other colleagues, using other vendor platforms, that getting FTTH services deployed was a challenging process.
