Phoenix Photonics to unveil space-division multiplexing components at OFC 2013
UK-based fiber-optic components specialist Phoenix Photonics plans to launch a new range of fiber spatial-mode control components at OFC. Phoenix will showcase mode converters for few-mode fibers and “photonic lantern” technology for space division multiplexing (SDM).Phoenix says it has the technologies and expertise to manufacture high-quality optical fiber components. The company’s portfolio already includes a range of all-fiber polarization control products. The new components are a result of Phoenix’s research in the EU-supported MODE-GAP project, investigating mode division multiplexing for next-generation telecommunication networks (see “MODE-GAP project makes progress in mode-division multiplexing”).Dr. Ian Giles, CEO of the company said, “With increasing demands for data, there is a developing market interest in SDM techniques to address the potential capacity crunch. Multimode transmission is a possible solution to meet the industry’s needs, and Phoenix is currently using all-fiber technology to develop a new range of passive spatial mode control components.”Phoenix primarily provides optical fiber components and modules for telecommunications test and measurement instrumentation and sensing systems. The company also supplies university R&D departments and research establishments developing next generation systems. The new SDM components will be on display at OFC, taking place on March19 – 21, Anaheim Convention Center, CA, in booth #1710.

United Fiber & Data, rock stars, plan low-latency fiber network from New York to Virginia
United Fiber & Data (UFD) has announced plans for a new fiber-optic network that will offer a redundant, highly available, low-latency path from New York City and its surrounding areas to Ashburn, VA. The popular route connects two important sites for Internet peering and high-bandwidth networking. The network will be differentiated by its diverse path between the two end points. Also by the fact that its investors include rock stars.Founded in 2009, UFD says it has completed all the necessary planning and has secured rights of way for the first phase of construction, which will break ground on March 1. The company assrts its high-capacity, all-optical fiber cable network will deliver a complete suite of all-fiber networking and broadband services. UFD says its privately owned and operated infrastructure will provide customers with a reliable DWDM network capable of delivering services up to 100 Gbps. The UFD network will span more than 300 miles between New York City and Ashburn and will interconnect with many of the key data center, carrier interconnect, and financial trading locations in the New York/New Jersey and northern Virginia areas. Between those two locations, the network will traverse diverse routes through New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Maryland, bypassing the traditional I-95 route and instead stretching through the central Pennsylvania cities of Allentown, Reading, Lancaster, and York. From there, the network will travel to Frederick, MD, and into Ashburn.UFD has incorporated both logical and physical diversity into its plan, dramatically increasing its reliability, the company claims. Despite the longer physical path, the network is designed to deliver the lowest latency possible thanks to what UFD describes as “some of the industry’s most advanced equipment.” The additional capacity will drive local and regional commerce and community access, offering more bandwidth flexibility for businesses along or near the route.Major investors in the new network include three members of the multi-platinum band LIVE. (You know, these guys.) “The band members are dedicated to their hometown communities in Pennsylvania, and it is their intent to give back to this region that still supports them heavily,” said William Hynes, founder and member of the board of directors for UFD. “LIVE band members Chad Taylor, Patrick Dahlheimer, and Chad Gracey are honored to be part of this venture, as the new network will provide community access, increase job opportunities, and stimulate the local economy.”

UPMC taps Alcatel-Lucent IP and optical networking technology for healthcare 'big data'
UPMC, a healthcare provider in western Pennsylvania, has chosen Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) to supply IP and optical transport technology to help its network accommodate ever-larger data demands. The UPMC network provides communications services to hospitals, doctors' offices, and other sites throughout western Pennsylvania. UPMC’s heath systems include 20 hospitals, 3400 doctors, and more than 55,000 employees. The network will enable medical personnel to improve point-of-care decisions, reduce readmissions, and improve operations.
"Here at UPMC we see our network as a vital tool to support our mission - providing our patients with world-class healthcare. Our ongoing network modernization is ensuring that we remain at the forefront of healthcare innovation,” said William Hanna, vice president, technical services, Information Services Division of UPMC. “This new project with Alcatel-Lucent, the latest step in our longstanding collaboration, will enable us to not only increase the capacity of our network, but to make our entire enterprise smarter and more efficient, and ultimately improve patient care throughout the UPMC system."Alcatel-Lucent will supply its new 7950 XRS router family as well as 100-Gbps coherent transmission capabilities via its 1830 Photonic Service Switch (PSS)."The 'big data' needs of large-scale enterprises such as UPMC are breaking down the barriers between traditional IT systems and communications networks,” commented Michel Emelianoff, president, Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise said. “This project with UPMC offers a great example of how advanced IP and fiber optic technologies can enhance the operations of enterprises in a wide array of fields. We are particularly thrilled to play such a critical role in bringing improved healthcare services to the communities that UPMC serves."
