Fibertech expands footprint with five new metro networks
Embarking on its most significant expansion since its inception in 2000, Fibertech Networks says it will build new metropolitan fiber-optic networks in Akron, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Dayton, and Toledo, OH, while considerably increasing the size of its existing Columbus network.“This is a major expansion for Fibertech and a critical step in our development as one of the largest and fastest growing metro fiber providers in the Eastern US,” said John K. Purcell, chairman and CEO of Fibertech. “We already have major anchor tenant agreements in place in each of these markets, accelerating our position as a leading alternative access provider in Ohio.”To date, the company has built and owns more than 8,400 route miles of metro networks in 23 markets, and provisions its end-to-end connectivity products on that infrastructure. Fibertech says this ability is a key differentiator that gives its customers unprecedented control, scalability, and security of services.Specifically, Fibertech has networks in Pittsburgh, PA; Indianapolis, IN; Columbus, OH ; Providence, RI; Hartford, Bridgeport, Stamford, Danbury, New London, and New Haven, CT; Springfield and Worcester, MA; Syracuse, Rochester, Buffalo, Binghamton, White Plains, and Albany, NY; Wilmington, DE; Montgomery County, MD; Northern and Southern NJ; and Philadelphia.Since its inception, Fibertech has expanded its metro footprint rapidly in each of the cities it has entered. Typically, the company’s original core network in a given metro market encompasses more than 100 route miles. CenturyLink is Infinera's Tier 1 DTN-X customer
Revealing what a company source called “the worst-kept secret in optical communications,” Infinera Corp. (NASDAQ:INFN) has announced that CenturyLink (NYSE:CTL) is its oft-speculated Tier 1 customer for the DTN-X (see “Guess that customer!”). CenturyLink has begun to deploy the DTN-X as part of its nationwide 100-Gbps roll out.Infinera and CenturyLink are releasing few details of the deployment, although CenturyLink is not using the Instant Bandwidth capabilities Infinera recently announced. As reported previously, CenturyLink is using multiple vendors for its 100-Gbps upgrade, including Alcatel-Lucent (see “CenturyLink deploys 100 Gbps via multiple vendors”). “As CTL noted in 100G press release, the goal of placing 100G across a backbone (including metros) involves many vendors,” commented Pieter Poll, CenturyLink senior vice president of national and international network planning, engineering and construction, in a written response to Lightwave queries. “We acknowledged that the ALU 1625 was one of those vendors, as we announced this in 2009. We are pleased to have Infinera and the DTN-X as another partner in our build.”Neither Poll nor Infinera would say where the DTN-X has been deployed so far, the value of the contract relationship between the two companies, or how long the contract runs. “There is no defined start or end point,” wrote Poll. “Again, CTL's goal is to have 100G available across the footprint. This is a multi-vendor network and vendors compete for growth across segments. However, CTL manages this as ONE network for our customers.”Speculation over Infinera’s Tier 1 customer began as soon as the company announced this past April that the DTN-X had embarked on the OSMINE program that certifies products will operate with the Telcordia operational support systems (OSSs) that former Regional Bell Operating Companies such as CenturyLink, AT&T, and Verizon use (see “North American Tier 1 customer in Infinera's sights?”). Some media outlets and others had speculated that Verizon was Infinera’s customer, based in part on Verizon’s interest in the type of features the DTN-X offers as well as the fact Verizon’s Stu Elby spoke at the press event Infinera held to announce the platform.However, CenturyLink already had Infinera DTN platforms in its network, thanks to the Qwest acquisition, which opened the door for the DTN-X. “We evaluated the available 100G solutions for long haul optical transport and the DTN-X platform stood out,” said Matt Beal, CenturyLink senior vice president - corporate strategy, product development, and chief technology officer via an Infinera press release. “Our experience with the Infinera DTN platform has demonstrated a system based on quality, ease of use, proven technology and reliability. As a customer since 2004, we look forward to including the DTN-X as part of our next generation network and achieving the same positive results as we have in the past.”

Reliance Globalcom taps Ciena for another fiber-optic network upgrade
For the second time in less than a week, Ciena Corp. (NASDAQ: CIEN) and Reliance Globalcom have revealed that the latter will use equipment from the former in a network upgrade. The latest announcement covers the upgrade of Reliance Globalcom’s FNAL backhaul network in Asia.Reliance Globalcom will use Ciena’s 100-Gbps enabled 6500 Packet-Optical Platform in the FNAL upgrade. The service provider now will use 40-Gbps OTN-based wavelengths across FNAL subsea segments, and between its Taipei and Seoul points-of-presence (PoPs). The upgrade enables Reliance Globalcom to offer bandwidth speeds ranging from 1 Gbps to 40 Gbps, with an option for 2.5 Gbps and 10 Gbps between its PoPs. This upgrade to the terrestrial portion of FNAL complements an earlier 40-Gbps deployment on the undersea segment (see "Reliance Globalcom adds 40-Gbps coherent to FNAL submarine cable network").“Asia is currently among the leading regions where the Internet and broadband penetration rates are high but there is still a significant potential for bandwidth growth. Reliance Globalcom is committed to meet this growth by upgrading its network consistently in a cost-effective manner with the latest transmission technologies like OTN,” according to Punit Garg, president and CEO of Reliance Globalcom.Last week, the two companies announced that Reliance Globalcom will use the 6500 Packet-Optical Platform on its its FLAG Europe-Asia (FEA) submarine network (see “Reliance Globalcom picks Ciena for 100G submarine cable upgrade”).“High-bandwidth applications such as video and cloud computing continue to put pressure on today’s networks, requiring carriers like Reliance to deploy technologies that not only increase capacity but also provide more intelligent, adaptable networks,” said Anthony McLachlan, Vice President and General Manager, Asia Pacific, Ciena.
