Telefonica taps Alcatel-Lucent for core router deployments in Argentina and the Czech Republic
Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) says Telefónica has selected the system provider’s new Alcatel-Lucent 7950 Extensible Routing System (XRS) for IP optical network upgrades in Argentina and the Czech Republic. Telefonica will be among Alcatel-Lucent’s first customers for the 7950 XRS.Telefonica will use the systems as part of an IP network upgrade to handle increasing packet-based traffic.“This collaboration with Alcatel-Lucent is part of a far-reaching network modernization effort which will give us one of the most powerful and efficient IP networks,” explained Enrique Blanco, Telefónica’s global chief technology officer. “In order for us to dramatically increase our network capacity and intelligence to address our customers’ fast-evolving demands we needed the support of a new, truly disruptive solution. The Alcatel-Lucent XRS met this requirement.”The 7950 XRS family, which uses Alcatel-Lucent’s 400G FP3 chipset, is designed to provide increased network capacity, efficiency, and flexibility while reducing power consumption and total cost of ownership.Federico Guillén, president of Alcatel-Lucent Spain and global account manager for Telefónica, said, “We are gratified that Telefónica has turned to Alcatel-Lucent to play such an important role in the transformation of their IP networks around the world. With the introduction of the 7950 XRS core router, our IP portfolio offers truly best-in-class capabilities across the board, and we look forward to the opportunity to take Telefonica’s IP network to the next level.”

PCCS submarine system consortium announced
Cable & Wireless Communications, Setar, Telconet, Telefonica Global Solutions, and United Telecommunication Services (UTS) have created a consortium to build the Pacific Caribbean Cable System (PCCS). The undersea cable system will run 6000 km between Jacksonville, FL, and Manta, Ecuador. The PCCS is designed to improve access to high-speed broadband and pay-TV services in the Caribbean and Central and South America. Between the two end points, the submarine fiber-optic cable system will serve landing stations in the islands of Tortola in the British Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Aruba, and Curacao, as well as Cartagena in Colombia and Maria Chiquita and Balboa in Panama.Alcatel-Lucent has been chosen to deploy the undersea cable system, which will support 100-Gbps transmission. Work is slated to start before the end of the year, with commercial launch expected in the third quarter of 2014.“The PCCS cable will add to the extensive subsea cable assets we have in the key corridor between North and South America and help us to meet the demand for good value, high-quality international connectivity from telecom and pay TV companies in the Caribbean, Central and South America,” Felix Camargo, COO of CWC Wholesale Solutions, said. “PCCS will also help us to support increased broadband penetration and usage in the pan-American markets in which we operate.”

ECI Telecom unveils Native Packet Transport platforms
ECI Telecom has unveiled a series of five Native Packet Transport (NPT) platforms, designed to better address the transition from legacy-based TDM networks to packet-based infrastructures than more generic multiservice provisioning platforms (MSPPs).With mixed packet and legacy networks “here to stay” in ECI’s estimation, the Native Packet Transport platforms (not to be confused with Transmode’s Native Packet Optical platforms) are designed to support packet-based services via MPLS-TP and TDM-based services via a combination of native TDM and Circuit Emulation Services (CES). According to Gil Epshtein, product marketing manager at ECI, the combination of these three approaches provides significant savings in total cost of ownership (TCO) over other alternatives. For example, Epshtein referenced an ACG Research study that showed that MPLS-TP offers a 55% reduction in TCO versus IP/MPLS for pure packet transmission in the metro applications at which ECI has aimed the NPT systems. The TCO savings increase when MPLS-TP and native TDM are combined in comparison to IP/MPLS and CES, according to ACG Research. However, ECI believes that CES support is necessary for true packet convergence, and therefore has offered both native TDM and CES support on the NPT systems.
