OIF targets framework document at next generation interconnect workshop
The Optical Internetworking Forum (OIF) held a workshop in support of next-generation interconnect technology at its Q1 member meeting last week in Cupertino, CA. The OIF hoped to use the workshop to develop a Framework Document this year that looks 5-8 years forward and identifies application spaces that may require industry consensus. Necessary projects would then be developed to look at what technology is needed to link various distances.“Bandwidth growth has driven system requirements for scale, size, power, and cost, while interconnect performance is starting to become a limiting factor in system performance,” said Steve Joiner of Finisar and a member of the OIF board. “OIF members are working together in a pre-competitive environment to consider ways of reducing the investment risk in future optical interconnect technology.”The workshop featured presentations by industry leaders from Brocade, Cisco, Ericsson, Finisar, Hewlett Packard, Infinera, Luxtera, Molex, TE Connectivity, Tellabs, and Xilinx. Two new projects were launched at the meeting. The Physical and Link Layer (PLL) Working Group proposed a 28G Medium Reach (MR) Common Electrical Interface (CEI) project to support chip-to-chip interfaces. It will build on the previous 28G CEI projects, including short reach and very short reach distances, all of which enable 100G applications. A low-power medium reach chip-to-chip interface is needed to enable high density and lower power line-card designs, the OIF members agreed. This project will facilitate increased channel density in carrier equipment and will specify operation of 1 to n lanes of data operating at up to 28 Gbps over 0 to 500 mm using one connector.
The PLL group then agreed to begin work on the Generation 2.0 100G Long-Haul DWDM Transmission Module MSA. This project will be based on the technical feasibility of creating a smaller module size with reduced power consumption for the next generation 100G MSA. Shrinking the size of the current generation 1.0 100G MSA module and lowering the power dissipation will open the possibility of having multiple modules or cards in a system rack slot, the working group believes.

Anritsu unveils multi-channel BERT with up to 32 Gbps on four channels
Anritsu Co. has introduced 28G/32G multi-channel modules for its MP1800A Signal Quality Analyzer (SQA) BERT system. The new capabilities will aid equipment designers evaluate interconnect interfaces up to 32 Gbps. Among other applications, the new capabilities will play well in dual-polarization quadrature phase-shift keying (DP-QPSK) design applications. The new modules provide the MP1800A with the ability to synchronize up to 12 pulse pattern generators (PPGs) in a single mainframe. The BERT system also will offer best-in-class intrinsic jitter and excellent input sensitivity, Anritsu asserts.Applications include designs aimed at long-haul 100-Gbps DP-QPSK, where four synchronized PPGs with precise skew control are required. The system also will support measurement of jitter tolerance and cross-talk on high-speed backplanes and interconnects. It also can prove useful in designs targeting OTU-4, CEI-28G, 32G Fibre Channel, and Infiniband EDR.The new modules the 28G/32G PPG modules (MU183020A, MU183021A) and 28G/32G Error Detector (ED) modules (MU183040A, MU183041A). The MU183020A 28G/32G PPG supports output for one or two channels, while the MU183021A supports simultaneous output for four channels. Each output channel supports data pattern synchronization and individual delay setting for high-accuracy crosstalk evaluation when transmitting multiple channels, Anritsu says. The PPG outputs 3.5-Vpp max. high-quality waveforms with an option for supporting direct driving of high-amplitude devices. The MU183040A 28G/32G ED supports one or two measurement channels, while the MU183041A supports simultaneous input for four channels. The ED offers direct measurement of 50-mVpp data signals and offers input sensitivity that is 2X better than competitive products, Anritsu asserts.

Internode FTTH extends beyond Australia’s NBN footprint
Australian service provider Internode has announced plans for a new fiber to the home (FTTH) broadband offering in greenfield customer locations. The services top out at 100 Mbps downstream and 40 Mbps upstream. As well as offering fiber-based services at all National Broadband Network (NBN) sites, Internode says it will deliver FTTH to real estate developments in Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, and SA, through partnerships with wholesale providers OptiComm and OPENetworks. The services start at AUS$49.95 for a 12/1-Mbps plan with a 30-GB data quota. "The new plans are 'NBN-equivalent' in terms of speeds, quotas and prices,” says Internode product manager Jim Kellett. "As well as more competitive prices, we've launched the new 12/1-Mbps level speed for fiber to the home customers and are delivering faster upload speeds with the standard services. We've also introduced the optional Power Packs and Business Packs so customers can tailor their fiber service to their particular needs."Existing FTTH customers using previous plans can maintain those service parameters. However, Internode will no longer offer those service plans to new customers.Kellett added that Internode's fiber services at Point Cook and South Brisbane would remain at higher prices than the new plans because of what he asserted were "uncompetitive" wholesale pricing from Telstra.
