Ekinops 20-Gbps transponder doubles 10-Gbps capacity
[UPDATED] Optical systems vendor Ekinops has unveiled a 20-Gbps transponder, which can transmit a pair of 10-Gbps in 50 GHz of spectrum on existing fiber-optic networks. The transponder not only doubles channel count, but decreases cost per 10-Gbps signal through shared electronics, an Ekinops source tells Lightwave.According to Rob Adams, vice president of product marketing and product line manager at Ekinops, the tunable transponder in essence transmits and receives a pair of 10-Gbps signals with 25-GHz spacing. These fit within the ITU-T 50-GHz grid without the need for guardbands, which means they can interoperate not only with Ekinops gear but travel through amplifiers and other systems from competing vendors. The use of a single transponder rather than two to transmit a pair of 10-Gbps signals offers an obvious reduction in cost-per-signal, Adams points out. Meanwhile, electronics within the transponder, including the company’s DynaFEC (Dynamic Forward Error Correction) technology, ensure that signal reach requirements are met.Ekinops positions the new capability as an alternative to carriers facing capacity constraints in their networks, but who don’t yet want to invest in 40- or 100-Gbps technology."While 100G will take many years to replace 10G as the primary service rate, it is refreshing that Ekinops is heavily concentrating on making practical improvements on a more vital and valuable type of solution," said Mark Lutkowitz, principal at Telecom Pragmatics. "The bulk of capital expenditures on optical equipment by carriers will remain based on 10G technology for an extensive period of time."[UPDATE] The transponders have been available since last fall. Sources say Ekinops has a customer for the technology, but declined to divulge the customer's identity.

Mark Floyd new Cyan chairman
Packet-optical transport systems developer Cyan Inc. announced that present board member Mark Floyd has been named board chairman. A member of Cyan's board since early 2007, Floyd was most recently CEO of SafeNet and is currently chairman of the board at NetSocket and director at Riverbed."Having worked with service providers for most of my career, I have never seen a period of greater change for them than the current one," stated Floyd. "Cyan's unique set of solutions help service providers capture the opportunities presented by this unprecedented change. I am excited about my expanded role with Cyan and our expanding impact on the industry."According to Cyan CEO Mike Hatfield, "We see tremendous growth opportunities in front of us and Mark is the right person to help us capitalize on those opportunities. His considerable experience with early-, mid-, and late-stage private and public companies, public offerings, and significant mergers and acquisitions are invaluable to us at Cyan."Earlier in his career, Floyd was chairman at Tekelec, CEO at Entrisphere, founder and CEO at Efficient Networks, and CEO of Siemens ICN in the US. Floyd was also a partner with El Dorado Ventures, held executive positions at Crosspoint Ventures, and served in a variety of management and executive positions at NetWorth, Interphase, Scott Instruments, and Texas Instruments.

Huawei bolsters R&D with acquisition of CIP Technologies
Huawei Technologies Co Ltd. has acquired the photonics research laboratory, Centre for Integrated Photonics Ltd. (CIP), from the East of England Development Agency (EEDA) in the UK.CIP has a long and distinguished heritage. Located at Martlesham Heath near Ipswich, the center has been a location for photonics research activity since the 1970s when it was the home of BT Research. Corning took over BT Research in 2000. When Corning decided to close the facility down at the end of 2002 in response to the industry downturn, EEDA came to the rescue.CIP was launched commercially on January 1, 2004 to act as a photonics development facility for both universities and industry alike. Its funds came from three main sources: EEDA, involvement in European Union and UK Research Council projects, and commercial contracts.Over the years, CIP has notched up some significant achievements, notably in the field of hybrid photonic integration (see "CIP launches HyBoard hybrid photonic integration platform" and "Dual-channel photonic 2R regenerator delivers 100 Gbps")."CIP has a reputation as a world-class incubator in fiber-optic transmission and carries out world-leading cutting-edge research work in this hi-tech area," Huawei claimed in a statement. Huawei says it plans to continue to invest in fiber-optic R&D to ensure that CIP remains an innovator in this important technology sector. The terms of the deal were not disclosed, but EEDA seems quite happy. "This is a tremendous investment success story for EEDA, which acquired CIP in 2003 from its then American owners to save it from closure," said Professor Will Pope, EEDA’s chairman. "Following restructuring and investment in the business we’re very pleased to find such a prominent acquirer for the company where the skills of the staff and the accumulated know-how are to be exploited on an international scale."CIP’s CEO, Peter Wharton, added, "We had a good level of interest from potential acquirers, but the management team and staff overwhelmingly backed EEDA’s view of the Huawei bid. The last six months of working closely with Huawei has more than met our expectations, building the foundations for an excellent working relationship."Currently, Huawei has six research facilities in Europe, and in 2011 the company announced plans to double its UK workforce to 1,000 in addition to opening a European design center for its mobile device business and an internal audit center, both located in the UK.Huawei says the purchase of CIP demonstrates the company’s ongoing commitment to R&D in the UK. "I’m confident that CIP’s strong research abilities and its talented staff will further extend our European research presence to the UK, a key and important market to the company," said Victor Zhang, CEO of Huawei UK.Huawei says it will retain the CIP R&D team, which will become the core of the new Huawei UK R&D centre.
