China Telecom deploys Itibia business access gateways with BroadLight’s Helios processor
Fiber broadband semiconductor provider BroadLight says that China Telecom is using small and medium enterprise (SME) gateways based on BroadLight’s Helios processors to provide fiber-based business services. The roll out is part of China Telecom’s deployment of what it calls Biz Navigator services.“China Telecom is a leading operator in using fiber as a complete replacement of its legacy copper infrastructure,” remarked Julie Kunstler, principal analyst, optical components at market research and consulting firm Ovum. “Expanding its fiber access footprint to business applications via the Biz Navigator product is another demonstration of China Telecom’s leadership.”China Telecom selected the Itibia Technologies OfficeTen 1800 series SME integrated access gateways for the deployment. Itibia leverages the Helios processors in the gateways to meet CTC Biz Navigator requirements. The gateways support Ethernet, EPON, GPON, and wireless (WiFi/3G) services.“The OfficeTen1800 series provides a high level of integration of service functions for data communications, switching, wireless network, 3G, and voice access, all with simple and straightforward on-site deployment to best address SMEs’ needs in China,” said Dr. Liu Jiming, CEO of Itibia. “BroadLight’s Helios ‘fiber grade’ architecture best supports the high-performance requirement for this market.”BroadLight’s introduced the Helios line of processors this past June (see “BroadLight introduces new Helios embedded processor line”). PRTC selects Calix B6 to develop broadband in Kentucky
Peoples Rural Telephone Cooperative (PRTC) has begun to deploy Calix B6 Ethernet Service Access Nodes (ESANs)and the 2000 family of optical network terminals (ONTs) to bring fiber-based broadband services to Jackson and Owsley counties in Kentucky, according to Calix, Inc. (NYSE: CALX). PRTC will deploy gigabit passive optical network (GPON) technology to support such services as digital television, data, and voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) to more than 3,500 residences and businesses over fiber, funded by a broadband stimulus award.The PRTC broadband stimulus award totals $25.5 million in overall funds, including a $17.9 million grant and a $7.6 million loan, which will cover plant engineering, materials, labor, and other costs such as access equipment. With this award, Calix has now been selected access vendor to three Broadband Stimulus projects in Kentucky, amounting to over $227 million in awarded funds.Keith Gabbard, general manager and CEO at PRTC says, "This broadband stimulus initiative will bring one of the nation's most advanced fiber access infrastructures to the homes and businesses of Jackson and Owsley Counties, providing access to services that we believe will drive economic growth and new opportunity throughout these impoverished rural areas."PRTC has started this project in Owsley County and will deploy to additional homes and businesses in Jackson County. GPON technology will be installed across the B6 ESAN and Calix 2444 ONTs, bringing radio frequency (RF) video overlay, broadband services and Media Gateway Control Protocol (MGCP) VoIP to subscribers.

Xfone expands fiber network to include Burkburnett, Texas
Xfone Inc. (NYSE Amex and TASE: XFN) connected its first triple-play customer in Burkburnett, Texas, expanding the company’s “PRIDE” fiber-to-the-premise (FTTP) network. Xfone’s ongoing fiber build out, when completed, is expected to reach 19 new communities bringing its total FTTP passings to roughly 50,000. The company is funding the fiber network expansion with approximately $100 million in federal stimulus funding. Xfone has established its FTTP network in Lubbock, Levelland, Smyer, Wolfforth, and Littlefield, Texas, providing customers access to voice, video, and Internet services using high-speed broadband. “As we bring our high-speed fiber network to new markets, we continue to see excellent adoption rates as customers recognize the value and convenience of the high-speed bandwidth offering,” says Guy Nissenson, Xfone’s president and CEO. “With consumers’ increasing reliance on the Internet, both in residential and business applications, speed and accessibility are very important and our network offers both. Construction of the PRIDE Network is progressing and we look forward to bringing advanced broadband to more customers in the coming weeks.”
