Google names Kansas City, KS, FTTH test bed city
Approximately three months after its initial deadline, Google has named Kansas City, KS, as what it implied would be the first partner city in which it will test 1-Gbps fiber to the home (FTTH).Google made its announcement on its blog at 9:00 AM this morning in a post authored by Milo Medin, Google’s recently hired vice president, access services.Kansas City made the cut after nearly 1,100 cities responded to Google’s FTTH testbed RFI (see "Google evaluates FTTH submissions"). “In selecting a city, our goal was to find a location where we could build efficiently, make an impact on the community, and develop relationships with local government and community organizations,” Google said in the blog post. “We’ve found this in Kansas City.”Google says it plans to begin offering services in Kansas City early in 2012, pending approval from the city’s board of commissioners. It promises to provide updates on its progress at www.google.com/fiber/kansascityks.In developing these services, Google says it will work closely with such anchor institutions and civic organizations as Kauffman Foundation, KCNext, and the University of Kansas Medical Center.Details of the network architecture were not provided in the blog post nor during an announcement ceremony held this afternoon at Wyandotte High School in Kansas City. However, Google states in an FAQ page about the project that “we plan to manage the development and deployment of this network, working closely with outside vendors.” It also says that it will be working with the local utility company.Google first announced on February 10, 2010, its intention to create an FTTH testbed that would feature 1-Gbps connections. The goal at the time was to announce at least one partner by the end of the year. However, after being inundated with responses, Medlin announced in December that the company would need more time to choose its first network location (see “Google: No FTTH testbed choice this year”).It appears that Google won’t stop with the Kansas City deployment. Said Sergey Brin, co-founder and president of Google, in a video posted as part of the blog, “We’re rolling out to communities starting with Kansas City... 1 Gbps of access to every home.”

Draka wins FTTH software and consulting contract with e.wa riss Netze in Germany
Draka Communications won a European consulting, licensing, and training contract with e.wa riss Netze, a fiber services venture jointly owned by the public utility of the city of Biberach and EnBW, an energy provider for southwest Germany.Draka staff will evolve e.wa riss Networks’ existing high-speed fiber network serving the citizens of Biberach through the application of its FTTH expertise and DrakaXSNet FTTH Software Suite.“We are now implementing new, cost-effective development processes to support the planning, expansion, and documentation of our fiber network,” says Michael Preiss, CEO of e.wa riss Netze GmbH. “In Draka, we have found an innovative partner with a wealth of knowledge to bring to our fiber network projects.”Officials at e.wa riss Netze selected DrakaXSNet for its flexibility and cost efficiency when constructing FTTx networks, reveals a company representative. During a test phase with DrakaXSNet, they adopted a new approach to the development of the broadband network.“This is a wonderful opportunity to contribute to Biberach’s community fiber network development, as well as being an excellent reference for other local authority projects around Europe,” says Edgar Aker, director of marketing and product management, Draka Communications Telecom Solutions, EMEA.With network planning company E9, e.wa riss Netze began building the fiber infrastructure for its ewacom-branded fiber services in Biberach. Services began in January 2010, offering business areas and residents of Biberach triple-play service packages with flat-rate options and speeds of 50 Mb/s up to 150 Mb/s. Located in southwestern Germany, Biberach has a population of 32,000 and is a significant industrial location within the area. The regional utility and energy companies realized that building a high-performance broadband infrastructure would be an important pillar for the development of the community, ensuring a high level of universal services for businesses and citizens, says a representative. In 2009, e.wa riss Netze GmbH was set up as a 50% joint venture between the utility companies, focusing on the essential activities of a distribution network provider--managing the installation/construction, development, and the marketing of power and gas grids. The optical fiber network has now become an important division of e.wa riss Netze.DrakaXSNet--a passive network building resource with miniaturized fiber-optic components with network project design, planning, documentation, implementation and maintenance--is based on an econometric model designed to provide lower costs and control over capital (CAPEX) and operating expenses (OPEX).

Telekom Austria brings FTTH to Vienna
The Telekom Austria Group says it has “successfully finalized” the roll out of fiber-optic infrastructure in the 15th and 19th Vienna districts as part of its fiber pilot project. The pilot project will use both fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) and fiber-to-the-curb (FTTC) topologies.Approximately 90,000 households and commercial businesses in the two districts will now be served via Telekom Austria’s high-speed GigaNet network. Telekom Austria expects to connect approximately 2.1 million households and commercial businesses across the country to its GigaNet service by the end of the year.“Multimedia services are considerably driving broadband demand – this is why we have launched our GigaNet initiative. The rollout of a full-coverage fiber-optic network in the 15th and 19th Vienna districts marks a further important milestone in Austria’s digital capabilities. With fiber-to-the-home solutions, we can reach vastly improved transmission speeds going forward. The services that might push this network infrastructure to its limits have not been invented yet,” said Hannes Ametsreiter, CEO of the Telekom Austria Group.Telekom Austria initially will offer 30-Mbps services in the two districts. However, the pilot project also calls for 200 households and commercial businesses in both districts to receive 100-Mbps services, and one lucky family to receive 1-Gbps service. The carrier hopes to offer services at speeds greater than 30 Mbps in the second half of 2011.
