Startup Boosts Alcatel-Lucent's Backhaul
Small-cell backhaul specialist Sub10 Systems Ltd. announced Wednesday that it has landed a distribution agreement with Alcatel-Lucent (NYSE: ALU), making it the first major equipment vendor to offer the startup's wireless backhaul products. (See Alcatel-Lucent Picks Sub10 for Backhaul.)Alcatel-Lucent will include Sub10's Liberator millimeterwave radios as part of its metro cell backhaul offerings, the companies said.U.K.-based Sub10 specializes in millimeterwave radios that operate in the 60GHz frequency band and have capacity of up to 320 Mbit/s over a distance of up to 1 kilometer. The company believes those attributes make its products especially suited to small-cell backhaul, but the radios can also be used to link macro cell base stations that are close together.is joining another another startup, BridgeWave Communications , in AlcaLu's backhaul portfolio. (See AlcaLu Enhances Microwave Backhaul.)According to an Alcatel-Lucent spokesman, today's announcement does not affect the existing partnership with BridgeWave. The agreement with Sub10 is for 60GHz products, while the relationship with BridgeWave is for 80GHz (a.k.a., "E-band") products. Why this matters The distribution deal with Alcatel-Lucent can be seen as an endorsement of Sub10's products. Also, as backhaul remains one of the biggest challenges to the business case for small cells, today's news is an indication that millimeterwave radios could be a viable technology for providing high-capacity small-cell backhaul.

Cisco Snaps Up Wi-Fi Analytics Startup
Cisco Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: CSCO) will add some Wi-Fi smarts after snapping up ThinkSmart Technologies, an Ireland-based startup whose software analyzes Wi-Fi traffic patterns in public venues such as retail locations, hotels and airports.Financial terms weren't disclosed, but it's a small deal, announced on the Cisco blog by Hilton Romanski, head of Cisco corporate business development.According to a Cisco spokeswoman, ThinkSmart's four employees have joined Cisco's Wireless Networking Business, a unit that makes access points, wireless LAN controllers and wireless network management systems. ThinkSmart's technology, which collects data on Wi-Fi activity within a venue based on elements such as time of day, traffic patterns and "dwell times," will be integrated with Cisco's Mobile Services Engine.ThinkSmart, a company founded in 2010 and led by CEO Brendan O’Brien, was incubated at Ireland's University College Cork (UCC).Why this matters
The buy gives Cisco some additional Wi-Fi smarts and expertise as service providers aim to improve the customer experience on their wireless broadband networks. The buy comes into play as service operators, including cable operators, deploy Wi-Fi networks to help backhaul cellular traffic and to serve as a free add-on/retention tool for high-speed data customers.

FCC Wary of Usage-Based Broadband
Welcome to the broadband and cable news roundup, Hump Day edition. While usage-based pricing for broadband is a "useful tool" to help ISPs manage growing network loads as more consumers use high-speed connections to access video, it's a tool that can also be abused, Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Julius Genachowski warned during a speech given Tuesday at the VOX Media headquarters in Washington, D.C. He didn't provide any round-numbered suggestions, but said consumers "need sufficient monthly broadband capacity to make e-commerce routine and unconstrained," and that he's "concerned about practices that harm competition, including from over-the-top providers," depress broadband usage or prevent ISPs from boosting broadband speeds and capacity. His comments come as several U.S. ISPs launch or test usage-based broadband policies that charge extra when customers exceed soft, monthly data caps. (Nasdaq: INTC)'s Puma 6 chip that can bond 24 downstream channels and support speed bursts near 1Gbit/s will be among the products Arris Group Inc. (Nasdaq: ARRS) will show off at next month's Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers (SCTE) Cable-Tec Expo in Orlando, Fla. Hitron Technologies Inc. , an Arris competitor, has developed similar products and expects to submit a wireless gateway version to CableLabs for certification testing in November. (Nasdaq: CMCSA, CMCSK) is closing three call centers in north California, a move that will affect about 1,000 employees as the company shifts those jobs to centers located in states such as Colorado, Washington and Oregon. Comcast is moving those jobs due to the high costs of doing business in the Golden State, according to a local CBS affiliate.Online video sources are making strides, but cable still owns the market for on-demand movies on a paid, per-use basis, according to a study from NPD Group Inc. . Comcast was responsible for 48 percent of all paid VoD movie rentals in the first half of 2012, followed by DirecTV Group Inc. (NYSE: DTV) (14 percent) and Time Warner Cable Inc. (NYSE: TWC) (9 percent). Telco VoD was the fastest-growing segment, noting a year-over-year growth rate of 24 percent, outpacing Internet VoD's 15 percent.Barnes & Noble Inc. is the latest tablet-maker to take a stab at video services. The Nook Video, due out this fall, will let users buy and rent movies and TV shows from several sources, including HBO, Sony Pictures, Starz Entertainment LLC , and Walt Disney Co. (NYSE: DIS). Nook Video will also be compatible with UltraViolet, a rights platform that lets users buy a DVD or Blu-ray title that can also be watched on an array of broadband-connected devices.
