Mapping 4G: Sprint Adds 5 More LTE Markets
Sprint Nextel Corp. (NYSE: S) has added five more Long Term Evolution (LTE) markets to its lineup as the Apple Inc. (Nasdaq: AAPL) iPhone 5, which can use the faster data transfer technology, is arriving on its network.Sprint is now up 24 towns and cities that have street-level 4G coverage. It maintains that it will launch over 100 4G towns and cities in the coming months but still isn't putting any definite dates out yet. The operator has launched LTE in Wichita, Topeka and Lawrence, Kans.; Waukegan-Lake County, Ill.; and Barnstable-Hyannis/Mid-Cape, Mass. Why this matters Thanks to Apple Inc. (Nasdaq: AAPL) and Samsung Corp. , users are now starting to buy 4G LTE devices in large numbers so having the coverage actually starts to become an issue. Sprint said that it had sold 1 million LTE devices earlier this month. iPhone 5 sales, which hit 5 million in the first weekend, have the potential to add a considerable number of new 4G connections to the fledgling network. Overture Appoints New CEO
Carrier Ethernet access market leader Overture Networks Inc. has named Mike Aquino as its new president and CEO, with incumbent chief executive Jeff Reedy sliding along the management table to become chief strategy officer. (See Overture Appoints New CEO.)Aquino joins from Ciena Corp. (Nasdaq: CIEN), where he was general manager of the global government solutions group. Prior to that he was Ciena's senior vice president and general manager of global field operations (sales, marketing and commercial management). The access gear vendor says the appointment will "help guide Overture through its next phase of customer and revenue growth worldwide."The company is doing OK already, though. According to Heavy Reading Senior Analyst Stan Hubbard (aka the Ether Man), who compiles the Carrier Ethernet Access Platforms Quarterly Tracker, "Overture has emerged as a standout player in the carrier Ethernet access/edge market in the past several years. Heavy Reading estimates that it slightly edged Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. for the No. 1 position in the global Carrier Ethernet Access Platform (CEAP) market during the rolling four-quarter period ending in the second quarter of 2012."
"Overture was the market share leader in both Ethernet-over-bonded copper pair platforms and Ethernet-over-TDM access circuit platforms in the second quarter and is now among the top eight suppliers of Ethernet-over-fiber access platforms worldwide," he adds. Why this matters This announcement comes as a bit of a surprise as Overture has not been showing signs of needing new leadership."Jeff Reedy and the Overture team built up a strong and broad access portfolio and a large customer base that includes many Tier 1 and Tier 2 providers," notes Hubbard. But every company needs fresh blood from time to time and a fresh perspective may be needed now that the merger with Hatteras, overseen by Reedy, is well behind it. (See Overture & Hatteras Gang Up on Carrier Ethernet and Overture, Hatteras to Merge.)And there's no doubt the new CEO comes with a positive reputation. "Aquino has great customer relationships, especially in the government space, and is a strategic thinker. He may open up new doors on the sales side that have been closed up until now," adds Hubbard.Overture had not responded to questions about why a new CEO was needed as this article was published.

Euronews: Telekom Austria Slashes Dividend
Telekom Austria AG (NYSE: TKA; Vienna: TKA), SFR and ADVA Optical Networking (Frankfurt: ADV) loom large in today's romp through the EMEA headlines.Worries about the "intensification" of domestic competition prompted Telekom Austria to slash its dividend for 2012 from €0.38 per share to €0.05 per share, and to maintain that level for 2013 too. The postponement of the spectrum auction in Austria to 2013 -- and the attendant need for cash -- is also a factor. Separately, Carlos Slim's upping of his stake in Telekom Austria, to 22.76 percent, has been confirmed. (See Telekom Austria Cuts Dividend, América Móvil Seals Telekom Austria Stake and Euronews: Slim Takes a Breather.)SFR, France's second-largest mobile operator with about 20 million subscribers, announced plans to launch Long Term Evolution (LTE) services in the city of Lyon on Nov. 28. The operator also said that it will cover 60 percent of the country's population with its dual-carrier HSPA 3G network, which has downlink speeds up to 42 Mbit/s and is supported by a range of devices including Apple Inc. (Nasdaq: AAPL)'s iPhone 5, Motorola Inc. (NYSE: MOT)'s RAZR HD and High Tech Computer Corp. (HTC) (Taiwan: 2498)'s One XL. Also interesting is the operator's new shared mobile data package, which allows subscribers to have two SIM cards and use between 2GB and 6GB on multiple devices. (See Euronews: FT Commits to LTE Rollout.)Germany's ADVA has been chosen by DE-CIX, which describes itself as the world's largest Internet Exchange, to connect its core Frankfurt data centers with multiple 100G Metro channels. DE-CIX currently operates using 10G services. (See ADVA Lands German 100G Metro Deal.)
A couple of billing developments to report: British-owned Bango Inc. has integrated its mobile Web carrier billing software with Facebook, sending Bango's shares through the roof, as City A.M. reports; while Luxembourg's MACH has launched direct operator billing for the U.K.'s mobile networks for the purchase of apps and other online goods. (See Bango Brings Carrier Billing to Facebook and MACH Launches Direct Operator Billing in UK.)BT Group plc (NYSE: BT; London: BTA)'s teleconferencing unit has joined forces with Dolby Laboratories Inc. (NYSE: DLB) on a technology trial intended to make audio conference calls sound more like face-to-face meetings, rather than the typical "Houston we have a problem" experience.
