Velocity Network installs Zhone Technologies’ MXK Platform in Pennsylvania
Zhone Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:ZHNE), which provides FTTx network access equipment, says it has expanded its relationship with Velocity Network and Velocity.Net Communications Inc., an Internet service provider (ISP) and competitive access provider (CAP) in northwest Pennsylvania. Velocity says its business customers will benefit from the expansion through increased scalability and network flexibility of Zhone’s MXK platform.Velocity has offered high-speed Internet access to thousands of local businesses and residential customers in northwestern Pennsylvania since 1996. In July 2011, Velocity deployed Zhone’s MXK as its multi-service access product for business VoIP and high speed Ethernet-over-copper services in Erie, PA. With Zhone’s MALC multi-service platform already deployed in its network, Velocity needed a service that would interoperate with the existing network without any negative side-effects.Velocity plans to offer a wide range of advanced services to its customers. Zhone’s MXK is currently deployed and supports asymmetrical digital subscriber line (ADSL2+) and symmetrical high bitrate digital subscriber line Ethernet in the first mile (SHDSL-EFM) services in Velocity’s network.“Flexibility and performance were critical elements in our decision process for the access platform,” noted Matt Wiertel, director of business development, Velocity. “Zhone offers the most flexibility with its fiber and copper cards, and we have been extremely pleased with the performance of our existing MALC. With the addition of the MXK, we will be able to serve a larger segment of the Erie region and offer increased bandwidth to our commercial clients.”The density offered by Zhone’s eight-port GPON cards within a very small footprint appealed to Velocity. The MXK’s 460 Gbps backplane, 28 Gbps uplinks and Terabit switching capacity were additional factors in its ultimate decision as Velocity looked to expand their network.

CTS Telecom chooses ADTRAN for access network upgrade
CTS Telecom, an ILEC and CLEC serving southwestern Michigan, has chosen the Total Access 5000 from ADTRAN Inc. (NASDAQ:ADTN) for a network upgrade. CTS expects the program will better enable it to address higher-speed data demands and evolve the network to support voice over IP (VoIP) to its new softswitch.The company also will turn to ADTRAN for the core technology for a fiber roll-out funded in part by a broadband stimulus award, the systems vendor adds.CTS will use the Total Access 5000 to offer its customers triple-play services including premium HD channels and video on demand. The service provider also will use the platform’s Active Ethernet capabilities to support new business services with low delay and high reliability.ADTRAN asserts the ability to provide multiple services from the same Total Access 5000 platform will enable quick service roll out and rapid revenue generation. CTS also will benefit from minimal staff training requirements and simplified network maintenance. “We needed to upgrade the legacy DLCs in our ILEC territories and replace line units in conjunction with the softswitch migration at our CLEC. The Total Access 5000 was the perfect solution for both applications,” said Chad Colliver, project manager, CTS Telecom. “This platform provides the flexibility and scalability we needed to increase the efficiency of our network, provide faster DSL services to our customers, all while positioning us for future growth with next-generation services.”

Frontier to deploy ADTRAN platforms in three-year FTTN broadband expansion project
Building on a successful “prove it to me” deployment last year, ADTRAN, Inc. (NASDAQ:ADTN) says it has won a contract to supply equipment to Frontier Communications Corp. (NYSE:FTR) for a major upgrade of the carrier’s broadband delivery capabilities. Frontier has targeted networks it acquired from Verizon in 14 states for an upgrade that will enable it to supply 3-4 Mbps downstream and 1 Mbps upstream to at least 85 percent of its customers in the region by 2013.ADTRAN Director of Marketing, Carrier Networks Division Kevin Morgan says that his company will supply its Total Access 5000, 1200, and 1100 systems to support the three-year effort. Frontier will use the equipment to create a fiber to the node (FTTN) network that will expand broadband service capabilities across the former Verizon footprint.Morgan says that high-speed Internet and similar broadband services were only available to approximately 62.5 percent of subscribers within the footprint when Frontier first acquired the customer base from Verizon. Frontier embarked on an intensive 180-day buildout program last year for which ADTRAN also supplied equipment (see “Frontier Communications selects ADTRAN for FTTN”). Its success during that rollout paved the way for its role in this more extensive project, Morgan asserts.Michael Golob, senior vice president, engineering and technology for Frontier, concurred with this assessment in a statement included in ADTRAN’s announcement of the award. “ADTRAN was a major part of our 180-day roll out last July and performed exceptionally well,” Golob said. “The breadth of its solutions is enabling us to meet our footprint coverage goals and positions us perfectly for future business and premium residential services.”
