CenturyLink deploys 100 Gbps via multiple vendors
CenturyLink Inc. (NYSE: CTL) is the latest U.S. carrier to announce nationwide 100-Gbps capabilities. The Tier 1 service provider says it now can support 100-Gbps wavelengths across its nationwide fiber-optic backbone as well as in more than 50 metro markets. More than one vendor is supplying 100-Gbps technology to the carrier, a CenturyLink spokesperson tells Lightwave. In addition to the U.S. deployments, CenturyLink also has added 100-Gbps capacity in its networks in Singapore and London. CenturyLink plans to add 100-Gbps capabilities to more cities outside the U.S. early next year as well. The 100-Gbps offering is available to enterprise and wholesale customers via CenturyLink’s dedicated 100 Gigabit Ethernet Optical Wavelength Service. The carrier plans to extend the high-capacity capabilities early in 2013 to include connectivity to Savvis cloud, hosting, and colocation services; data centers; and customer business locations. The company originally did not release the names of the systems companies whose 100-Gbps technology is being deployed. However, Sean Buckley of Fierce Telecom reported yesterday that Alcatel-Lucent's (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) 1625 LambdaXtreme Transport platform is part of the roll out. CenturyLink media relations staffer Stephanie Meisse, Buckley’s source, subsequently confirmed via email to Lightwave the accuracy of the Fierce Telecom report. “[B]ut they are not the only vendor,” Meisse wrote. “We are not disclosing the others at this time.”The confirmation that more than one vendor is supplying 100-Gbps technology to CenturyLink is good news for those of us who speculated that the company is Infinera’s (NASDAQ: INFN) so far unidentified Tier 1 customer for the DTN-X (see “Guess that customer!”).CenturyLink’s U.S. 100-Gbps deployment follows Verizon’s earlier announcement of its 100-Gbps roll out plans (see “Verizon to deploy 100 Gbps on three U.S. routes”). XO Communications also recently unveiled its U.S. nationwide 100-Gbps deployment (see “XO Communications chooses Nokia Siemens Networks for nationwide 100G network”).

Google begins connecting homes to Kansas City FTTH network
Google says it is ready to begin connecting customers in the Kansas City, KS, “fiberhoods” that met its demand criteria (see “Google Fiber open for business”).The first fiberhood on the FTTH list is Hanover Heights. Dubs Dread will follow later this month, according to the schedule on the Google Fiber website. These two areas appear to be the only fiberhoods that will see installations this year. An additional five should see deployments begin in the first quarter – or, as the Google schedule puts it, “winter” – of 2013.Google expects to have deployments underway by next fall in all 69 of the Kansas City, KS, fiberhoods currently scheduled to receive service. Deployments in Kansas City, MO, are expected to begin next spring, with Crown Heights at the top of the deployment roster. The company is emphasizing customer service. A post on the Google Fiber Blog notes that the installers will clean up after themselves – “each installer carries a vacuum cleaner,” the blog assures potential customers. The company also has produced a video to give customers an idea of what an installation will entail.Google also plans to launch services in five additional area towns: Kansas City North and Kansas City South in Missouri, as well as Westwood, Westwood Hills, and Mission Woods in Kansas.

Integra Telecom adds dark fiber to fiber-optic network services portfolio
Integra Telecom, Inc. has added dark fiber to its roster of networking, communications, and technology offerings. Integra expects the dark fiber product will prove popular for network expansion, mobile backhaul, and on-net connectivity among wholesale customers as well as with large enterprises. The network services provider says its new dark fiber product can support up to 400 Gbps of capacity per fiber pair across Integra's fiber-optic network. The network includes more than 150,000 fiber miles, with metro services available in Boise, Portland, Salt Lake City, Seattle, and Spokane. Integra's dark fiber offering will also be available within the company's 5,000-mile long-haul fiber network.Integra will offer a variety of lease options including capital lease and Indefeasible Rights of Use (IRU). A lease-to-own option also will be offered “on an individual case basis,” Integra says."As business requirements for high-bandwidth applications continue to increase, both carrier and enterprise customers are evaluating alternatives for cost-effective, highly scalable network data transport," said Joe Harding, senior vice president of marketing at Integra. "Integra's dark fiber leverages the value of our network assets, meeting this demand with easy-to-manage, high bandwidth sold through flexible bundles, lease options, or IRU depending on customer needs."
