Zhone Technologies releases MXK 1U GPON OLTs
Zhone Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:ZHNE) has announced immediate availability of the MXK 194 and MXK 198 platforms, new 1U form-factor GPON Optical Line Terminal (OLTs) for small to mid-scale deployments. The MXK 194 is a 1U Single Line Multi-Service (SLMS)-based platform providing four-port GPON FTTP connectivity supporting up to 256 ONTs/ONUs, 8x Fast Ethernet/Gigabit Ethernet and optional 2x 10-Gigabit Ethernet uplink ports, ONT Management and Control Interface (OMCI), link aggregation, Rapid Spanning Tree Protocol (RSTP), Ethernet Automatic Protection Switching (EAPS) support, and network management via the Zhone Management System (ZMS).The MXK 198 is a 1U SLMS-based platform providing eight-port GPON FTTP connectivity supporting up to 512 ONTs/ONUs with all the other features and functionality provided by the MXK 194 platform. The ZMS provides management and provisioning across the access network, from ONT/ONU to the central office OLT. Support for Zhone's EZ Touch Provisioning helps extend ZMS element and network management capabilities to the ONTs/ONUs and provides an automated approach for software upgrades and service provisioning on the ONTs/ONUs, according to Zhone. In addition to being used separately, the two platforms can be stacked together for larger deployments.“IDC forecasts 7.6 percent CAGR in the global FTTx market over the next five years,” said David Emberley, research manager of telecommunications equipment at IDC. “As service providers begin to look towards deep fiber deployments as an option, they also have unique deployment needs that need to be addressed. We believe that the smaller form-factor access platforms will play an important role in the broadband network build-out as service providers analyze cost and service efficiency factors. With the introduction of the MXK 194 and MXK 198 platforms, Zhone appears to be complementing its multi-service access approach and is poised to further strengthen its position in the FTTx market.”

Ransmode unveils iWDM-PON strategy
Transmode has announced its intention to support WDM-PON via its existing WDM platforms. The new iWDM-PON architecture will be designed to support multiservice access networks via standard C-Band DWDM optics.Transmode's iWDM-PON strategy will leverage its existing TM-Series and TG-Series Active and Passive WDM platforms, thus extending WDM metro network capabilities into FTTx applications, primarily in enterprise and backhaul scenarios to start. For example, Transmode plans to add existing active component to the passive TG-Series, as well as additional optics now in development, to create the iWDM-PON architecture. For example, as Magnus Olson, director of hardware engineering at Transmode, described in a presentation today at the WDM-PON Forum in Orlando, Transmode plans to introduce WDM-PON friendly injection-locked self-tuning SFPs. The injection-locked technology provides the required central-office seeding light source for WDM-PON operation. The company also a low-cost fixed wavelength 1-Gbps DWDM SFP. The two new devices will significantly reduce the cost of WDM optics in access devices and simplify network deployments, Transmode asserts.According to Olson, Transmode envisions the ability to support 40 channels via the iWDM-PON technology. Meanwhile, staying on the ITU-T grid in the C-Band promotes interworking among the access, metro, and core without the need for wavelength conversion. It also promotes the ability to extend WDM-PON reach via standard amplification and dispersion compensation technologies. The use of WDM-PON enables service providers to increase capacity on a per-customer basis, Transmode adds.Transmode expects customer trials of the new self-tuning iWDM-PON options to begin at the start of 2012, with network deployments planned in the middle of 2012.

ADTRAN Doubles Total Access 5000 Active Ethernet, GPON FTTH capacity
ADTRAN Inc., (NASDAQ:ADTN) announced at the FTTH Conference in Orlando, FL, that it has doubled the capacity of the Total Access 5000. The upgrade boosts the capacity for both Active Ethernet and GPON applications. The Total Access 5000 will now support 5,376 GPON subscribers and 504 Active Ethernet subscribers per chassis. The company implemented the capacity upgrade by increasing the number of subscribers supported per line card. By implementing bi-directional transceivers, each of the 24 ports per line card can support either a single Active Ethernet connection or a full GPON 2.5 Gbps downstream and 1.25 Gbps upstream connection. Complementing the Total Access 5000 Multi-Service Access and Aggregation Platform upgrade is a new family of universal ONTs that bring auto-sensing support for both Active Ethernet and GPON.“ADTRAN’s new additions to their FTTH portfolio and ability to support us long term were key deciding factors in our evaluation of solutions available in the market today,” said Richard Cavin, senior network manager, Valley Telephone (VTCI), which recently chose the Total Access 5000 for its network upgrade. “The added scalability and density of the Total Access 5000 with the new 24-port Active Ethernet module made it a perfect fit for our project, allowing VTCI to reach twice as many customers from a single chassis without adding any additional complexity to our network.”
