An ambitious and unusual project is being undertaken in the UK to bring superfast broadband to a remote community. Fiber-optic cables that have remained unused on the seabed of the Atlantic Ocean for about three years are to be diverted to the Isles of Scilly, off the southwest tip of Cornwall, as part of a £3.7 million scheme to give the islanders better broadband access.A cable ship is due to spend about a month later this year cutting and moving two fiber cables that had previously been used for communications between the UK and Ireland and Spain.The project is part of the £132 million Superfast Cornwall initiative between the European Regional Development Fund, BT, and Cornwall Council, which plans to deliver faster broadband throughout Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly by 2014 (see "BT launches FTTP project in Cornwall"). The private and public sector partnership has already delivered high-speed fiber-optic broadband to more than half of all Cornish homes and businesses.It is expected that the initial Isles of Scilly customers will be connected during the first half of 2014.Until now, the 2,200 residents of the Isles of Scilly – located 28 miles off the South West tip of Cornwall – have had to make do with a broadband service provided by a radio link between Lands End and the Isles.Ranulf Scarbrough, Superfast Cornwall program director for BT, said, “BT engineers have devised a highly innovative and environmentally friendly scheme to bring fiber broadband to the islands that is pioneering in every sense of the word. It is certainly the most ambitious initiative of its kind ever undertaken in UK waters and probably in Europe.”Cllr Mike Hicks, chairman of the Council of the Isles of Scilly, said, "We are delighted that a solution has been found to give our islands the best broadband access. The Isles of Scilly's communications with the UK mainland and beyond are a key part of creating a better, more prosperous future for islanders and will allow this vibrant community to take full advantage of its unique location. Faster broadband will underpin our tourist trade, will help our farmers and growers, and will promote distance learning. New business opportunities will be stimulated on the Islands, encouraging local productivity and enhancing our quality of life."

Dell'Oro Group: Ethernet switch market reaches record revenue in 2012
According to a recent report by market research firm Dell'Oro Group, the Layer 2-3 Ethernet switch market reached $21 billion in 2012. Almost all of the growth came from data center network deployments, as spending in campus networks remained weak for most vendors, Dell’Oro reports."Ethernet switch market revenues in 2012 achieved a new record at $21 billion, " said Alan Weckel, vice president at Dell'Oro Group. "However, weak spending by the US government as well as a customer preference change caused modular switching to contract in 2012. We expected a shift towards fixed [switching] as improved stacking and resiliency in fixed switching helped campus deployments make the shift away from modular, but we believe the lack of spending by the US government, which typically purchases modular, was an additional pressure that caused the 2012 weakness."In looking forward to 2013, Dell’Oro expects the market to grow robustly with strong gains coming from the data center; however, it does not expect sales of modular switches will improve significantly.The report also shows that fixed top-of-rack (purpose built) 10 Gigabit Ethernet revenues grew over 50% in 2012, with strong demand from both enterprise data center, and especially service provider cloud customers. Centellax unveils quad-input 32-Gbaud linear modulator driver amplifier
Centellax has released the OA3MMQM, a low-cost lithium niobate (LiNbO3) quad-input 32-Gbaud linear modulator driver amplifier for dual-polarization 16-QAM (DP-16QAM) applications.The OA3MMQM has excellent gain, low noise figure, low harmonic distortion, and flat group delay, the company claims, which it says makes the device ideally suited for applications using advanced modulation formats at 32 Gbaud and beyond, including Mach Zender interferometer optical modulators.The linear modulator driver amplifier is designed to address the needs of 400-Gbps optical long-haul transponder module manufacturers. These requirements include the ability to drive 400G of data on an existing ITU long-haul WDM fiber channel, implemented with four channels of 32-giga-symbols/s data encoded using DP-16QAM modulation schemes.The 16QAM signal is composed by modulating both I and Q polarizations using a four-level pulse-amplitude modulation (PAM) scheme. Because the output is not saturated but linear, there can be crosstalk issues. Centellax say the OA3MMQM mitigates this problem using a special package design that electrically isolates each channel.“As the market moves to higher speeds we will continue to be on the forefront of the next generation of coherent technology. Our OA3MMQM quad linear module for 400G QAM applications will help our customers move towards advanced modulation formats at 32 Gbaud and beyond,” said Jay de la Barre, Centellax vice-president of worldwide sales.Features of the OA3MMQM include quad 5-Vpp linear outputs, <0.6-ps added RMS jitter, 20-dB gain, 11-ps rise/fall time, 7.4-W power dissipation, low harmonic distortion. and flat group delay. The device comes in a small hermetic package with GPPO connectors.The linear driver will also support DQPSK and DP-QPSK, in addition to DP-16QAM.for DP-16QAM
