Vitesse and Avago reference design targets 100G/120G connectivity
Vitesse Semiconductor Corp. (NASDAQ: VTSS) and Avago Technologies (NASDAQ: AVGO) are making available what they tout as the first CXP host joint reference design that offers 100G/120G connectivity for high-speed routers, enterprise data centers, and high-performance cloud computing applications. The companies are showing off the design this week at SC12 in Salt Lake City, UT.The reference design features Vitesse’s VSC7227 12-channel signal conditioner and Avago’s AFBR-83PDZ 100G CXP optical transceiver module. The reference design will help systems developers who seek to increase 10-Gbps port density as well as migrate to 100-Gbps support.Vitesse’s 12-channel VSC7227 supports data rates from 155 Mbps to 14.1 Gbps. It offers adaptive equalization on each channel with no requirement for firmware. The VSC7227 combines a CTLE/DFE input receiver that can equalize more than 30 dB of loss, along with a three-tap FIR output driver with better than 18 dB of de-emphasis.The Avago AFBR-83PDZ 100G CXP optical transceiver module supports 100 Gigabit Ethernet and Infiniband IB-QDR/IB-DDR/IB-SDR applications. It is designed to exceed the electrical requirements of IEEE 802.3ba 100G (100GBase-SR10 and CPPI) and optical specifications for the 100G SR standard of 100 m or even 150 m on OM4 fiber. The Vitesse reference design demonstrates the combined superior performance of the Avago CXP transceivers with the Vitesse signal conditioning ICs,” said Sharon Hall, product manager for parallel fiber-optic products at Avago. “With this combined solution, system designers can design 100G/120G optically connected systems with confidence and improved signal integrity.”“This reference design gives our customers a proven way to solve higher bandwidth demands in optical networks,” said Gary Paules, product marketing manager at Vitesse. “Through ecosystem developments such as with Avago, Vitesse continues to extend its connectivity leadership, enabling our customers to rapidly bring to market advanced solutions for high-density 100G Ethernet and Infiniband applications.”The reference design is available immediately.

EU VECTOR initiative targets new field-installable fiber-optic connectors
A seven-member team of companies and academic institutions has launched the “Versatile Easy stallable Connector implementing new Technologies for accelerated fiber Optic network Roll-outs in Europe” (VECTOR) program. The VECTOR group, funded through the European Union’s Seventh Framework Programme (FP7), aims to develop a new field-installable fiber-optic connector system. The system will include both a fiber-optic connector and an installation tool. The VECTOR team expects to create a field-installable fiber-optic connector system that offers performance similar to pre-connectorized offerings. TE Connectivity will coordinate the three-year program through its Belgian entity, Tyco Electronics Raychem BVBA. Other VECTOR team members include:DEMCON Advanced Mechatronics BV (The Netherlands) Celoplás – Plásticos para a Indústria SA (Portugal) Vrije Universiteit Brussel (Belgium) Universiteit Gent (Belgium)Telecom Italia S.p.A. (Italy)Telekom Deutschland GmbH (Germany).“Current connection technology requires extensive pre-engineering and highly specialized manpower for field deployment. This makes the installation slow, unreliable, and ultimately raises the cost per connection to hardly manageable levels,” explains Stéphane Berghmans, project coordinator at TE Connectivity.” With VECTOR we intend to make fiber-optic connections as easy as electrical wire connections and to bring affordable ultrafast Internet connections to all European households.”The team’s work will include both the VECTOR Connector (VeC) and the VECTOR Installation Tool (VeIT), according to information provided by a source close to the program. The VeC will be designed to support insertion and return losses in accordance with the IEC61300-3-4 and IEC61300-3-6 standards – better performance than connectors based on ferrules and aligned in a split sleeve adapter. The VeIT will be a handheld device that will perform fiber termination at length and connectorization. It will be designed to ease the burden of field technicians by automating such functions as fiber stripping, cleaning, cleaving, and fixation. In operation, the fiber will be fixed by heat-shrinking into the VECTOR plug. When mating the plugs into the VECTOR adapter, the bare fiber will be aligned to the mating fiber via what the VECTOR team describes as “novel alignment structures.” The VeC’s unique self-cleaning features will further improve reliability. The VeIT will be compatible with the majority of fiber-optic cables, pigtails, and drop cables. A ferrule-based converter will support compatibility with legacy connectors as well.

Pacific Wave R&E fiber-optic network goes 100 Gbps via Ciena
The Pacific Wave international network peering facility—which connects research and education (R&E) networks in 40 countries in the Pacific Rim and beyond—has boosted capacity through the installation of the 100-Gbps capable 6500 Packet-Optical Platform, according to the platform’s developer, Ciena Corp. (NASDAQ: CIEN). This upgrade enables Pacific Wave to offer 100-Gbps connectivity across its R&E network infrastructure, which covers the U.S. West Coast from Los Angeles to Seattle.Pacific Wave has five peering locations in in three cities: Los Angeles, Sunnyvale, and Seattle. Network participants are located throughout the Pacific Rim and beyond including Australia, Canada, China, Japan, Korea, Mexico, New Zealand, Qatar, Singapore, South America, Taiwan, and the United States. Connectivity to Europe is facilitated via peering with StarLight Chicago. The Corporation for Education Network Initiatives (CENIC) and the Pacific Northwest Gigapop (PNWGP) operate Pacific Wave as a joint project. The two groups performed the upgrade to ensure that Pacific Wave is consistent with the recent Internet2 and the US Department of Energy (ESnet) 100G backbone upgrades, Ciena says. The network supports ESnet’s On-Demand Secure Circuits and Reservation System (OSCARS), which enables the dynamic provisioning of multi-domain, high-bandwidth virtual circuits. The 6500 packet-optical transport system enables Pacific Wave’s West Coast backbone to ride on the Internet2 backbone as a fully separated “virtual wave,” to offer the benefits of a private fiber-optic network through managed spectrum.“This upgrade is the latest step forward in Pacific Wave’s long history of advanced approaches to Layer 2 networking,” says Louis Fox, president & CEO of CENIC. “The 100G upgrade to the Pacific Wave backbone will help empower the next revolution in global scientific collaboration and Science DMZ-model research networking. Ciena’s impressive track record in high-speed fiber-optic network builds makes them a welcome ally in our mission to ensure that California research and education benefits fully from advanced networking and the innovation it enables.”“With this new 100G West Coast upgrade for Pacific Wave, plus the 10G Northern Wave peering connection between PacWave in Seattle and StarLight in Chicago, PNWGP is delighted to be taking part in what amounts to a massive advance in research networking throughout North America. This is truly 21st century networking, made possible by organizations that work together for a common goal,” added Amy Philipson, executive director of PNWGP.
