Angola Cables enhances connectivity with 100G technology from Alcatel-Lucent
Angola Cables, a consortium of Angolan telecommunications operators, is establishing a terrestrial fiber-optic link with the West African Cable System (WACS), the submarine communications network connecting the countries of West Africa with Europe. The new fiber-optic network in Angola – established using 100G coherent optical technologies from Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) – will support Internet services for customers of communications service providers in Angola as well as in neighboring countries, dramatically increasing Internet availability in this underserved region.As its name implies, WACS runs up the western coast of Africa, connecting the southern part of the continent with Europe as far north as the UK (see “WACS to extend submarine cable system from Portugal to the UK with Alcatel-Lucent’s 40G optical technology”).The four-fiber-pair system spans approximately 16,000 km and connects 15 terminal stations.Antonio Nunes, the CEO of Angola Cables, said that while Angola has connectivity to the outside world, the new 100-Gbps connection to the WACS will increase in the availability of communications services and provide stronger connections with the global community for consumers and businesses in Angola and throughout the region.Daniel Jaeger, vice-president of Alcatel-Lucent Africa, added, “Alcatel-Lucent is deeply committed to the vision of digital inclusion, and we are gratified by the opportunity to help bring world class communications services to the people of Angola and their neighbors.”

Polatis secures $4M of debt financing to fund continued growth
Polatis Inc., a developer of all-optical switch technology, says it has secured $4 million of debt financing through Clydesdale Bank to support the company's continued global growth.The funds will be used primarily to expand Polatis’ in-house manufacturing capability to meet customer demand for the company’s latest Series 6000 optical matrix switch, which enables transparent connectivity for up to 192x192 fiber ports (see “Polatis goes large with 192x192 all-optical switch”). It will also enable the company to fast track product development for customers in growth markets such as telecom etworks, data center interconnect, and government systems.“We are delighted to secure the $4 million of debt financing this week,” said Gerald Wesel, president and CEO of Polatis. “This will enable us to better respond to the increasing demand we are seeing from our customers for Polatis’ leading-edge switch technology and further supports our business plans for continued growth and product development for the next generation of technology.”

Integra Telecom adds dark fiber to fiber-optic network services portfolio
Integra Telecom, Inc. has added dark fiber to its roster of networking, communications, and technology offerings. Integra expects the dark fiber product will prove popular for network expansion, mobile backhaul, and on-net connectivity among wholesale customers as well as with large enterprises.The network services provider says its new dark fiber product can support up to 400 Gbps of capacity per fiber pair across Integra's fiber-optic network. The network includes more than 150,000 fiber miles, with metro services available in Boise, Portland, Salt Lake City, Seattle, and Spokane. Integra's dark fiber offering will also be available within the company's 5,000-mile long-haul fiber network.Integra will offer a variety of lease options including capital lease and Indefeasible Rights of Use (IRU). A lease-to-own option also will be offered “on an individual case basis,” Integra says."As business requirements for high-bandwidth applications continue to increase, both carrier and enterprise customers are evaluating alternatives for cost-effective, highly scalable network data transport," said Joe Harding, senior vice president of marketing at Integra. "Integra's dark fiber leverages the value of our network assets, meeting this demand with easy-to-manage, high bandwidth sold through flexible bundles, lease options, or IRU depending on customer needs."
